the taming of the .. turkeys?
« on: March 04, 2011, 09:39:51 pm »

so i got this new fort after finally finding a good embark ..

i brought 5 bluetingy hens + 1 cock *:P* so they would hatch .. prepared an extra section for this but were late on the door

after i put  up nestboxes half were occupied  ...but suddenly masses of turkey hens entered my fort beginning to beat the crap out of the bluebird hens .. after the assault i had a wounded hen left and 4 dead (i didnt realize the attack first), the wounded hen seemingly unable to lay more eggs ...
the turkys were laying massive amounts of eggs extra

so my question ... since hatching needs gobblers in this case do i have to tame at least 1 of the hens and a gobbler or does their presence on the map suffice for hatching?

and .. do you think those agressive bird attacks are normal?

I think its a bug. nests makes wild egg-laying animals go crazy.

Maybe you can build nests outside for the wild animals, and seal all of your egg-laying animals inside with their own nest boxes, via pet impassable doors. You get the eggs from the wild animals and your domesticated ones without anything being in serious danger.

Or if you want to catch and tame some of the wild ones, you can build a little indoor pasture/nesting room for your tame birds, assign them to it as a pasture zone, then put a few cage traps in the passageway leading into the room. Your dwarves/pets/whatever will walk over them, but any wild critters making a beeline for the nests get caught in them, so that you can tame them at your leisure (or chuck 'em in the zoo, for alligators and so on). (Unless of course you get a flock that outnumbers the traps!)

the thing is do i have to catch a male one for making tamed ones hatch or does their presence alone be enough .. male ones usually dont beeline as i witnessed

I found that if I lay cage traps in my entrance I'd catch a TON of turkeys heading for my nest boxes. Tamed them all and now I have an absolute army of turkeys laying eggs.

Wild turkeys (maybe other birds too but I've only witnessed this with turkeys) will attack anything that gets near their claimed nest.
