ASCII, tilesets make some things (catapults and workshops, for example) look goofy.

I used Mayday in my early months, about August of 2009.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Problems with tilesets, currently:

- Hard to distinguish different types of creatures, sometimes very hard, especially at small font size.
- Certain text like diplomat text and gender symbols are messed up.

Anyone know of a set that doesn't mess with either of these things? If so I might actually like it.

Also, the "ASCII" is actually http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_437

ral: good point, and compared with previous posters arguments -->

Are we talking just Tilesets (so to say just different "fonts") or as I assumed full graphic sets ("font"+"creature sprites") ???
I am not sure wether the "tileset(s)" Phoebus provides are in conjunction with modded language files - but so far I haven't noticed the weird characters used in text for DF2010 so far (and I am on OpenGL Mode, so no TTF for pure text).

P.S.: Small Font size ... can't compare those - as I always use 16x16 - and even on my Laptop with 1600x1200 (Edit: Thats the highest resolution I use on any of my displays (for that TFT its native, for my CRTs I stick to res. that support at least 85Hz)) that was IMHO to be considered small - but distinguishable enough for me.

ASCII.  It's just simpler to look at and analyze.

Square ASCII with modified 'construction' tiles. Being familiar with the default tileset means a small but signifant reduction in hassle when downloading new versions.

Plus I like to run at 12x12 to cram tiles onto the screen, and any 12x12 graphics still distinguishable at a glance are going to be symbolic anyway.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I started with tiles, but eventually the ASCII started to make sense.

I'd go back to tiles, but I'm not willing to put up with the broken text.

What do you mean "Diplomat txt is messed up"? Mine seems fine....
As for gender symbols... Sacks are boys, amulets are girls. (Guys have sacks, the girl symbol is kinda amulet-y)

Default set. I couldn't be bothered to change it since it works fine anyway.

I started playing this game to write an analysis paper on it for a game design class. Since tilesets, h4x, and other CC would affect the experience, I went pure vanilla and ASCII. I got used to the ASCII and have never used a tileset.

Tileset Ironhand, but only because the game crashes without it. ._.

Either or. Different tilesets have different atmospheres, and different atmospheres can help encourage a more varied playstyle.

Started with Mayday tiles, but once I got how the game generally works I switched to ASCII. Still, I get annoyed sometimes in adventurer mode when I see a group of 'g' moving around, only to find out they're groundhogs. If anyone can suggest a tileset (not a graphics set) where similar creatures appear as the same characters, kinda like in Nethack, then I'd love to use it.
