Do doors count as walls when placing doors?
« on: March 04, 2011, 05:54:09 pm »

I am currently planning a new fortress, and one feature shall be lovely wide hallways. This also includes 3 square wide enterances for workshops. However, I am wondering if I can place doors on the butchers workshops. Now, I need to place a door in the middle also, but seeing that there will be a door to either side of it, will I be able to place a door? Can doors be placed next to other doors, even if there are no walls there?
Also, please note that I am playing 0.31.18, not the newest version.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

No.  Only double doors are allowed.

Damn.

If I place a wall nearby (like in front of the doorway) and remove it, will the door remain there?

Nope, it'll deconstruct automatically.

You can, however, DIG out a wall beside a door, which will not cause it to deconstruct.
So with careful planning... yeah.

No, digging out a wall will cause an adjacent door to deconstruct, what you need to do is construct a wall adjacent to where you want your middle door, then place that door, then deconstruct the temporary wall, which will leave the door in place:

Code: [Select]
X=Wall
D=Door
.=Floor
T=Temporary constructed wall

Step #1 Place your edge doors and construct temporary walls adjacent to spaces between like so:
X...X
XD.DX
X.T.X
X...X

Step #2 Place middle door and after it is placed remove the temporary wall:
X...X
XDDDX
X.T.X
X...X

Final Result:
X...X
XDDDX
X...X
X...X

You can do this with as wide a gap as you desire, or with no gap at all, you can even build a ring of doors or something if you wanted using this technique

Typically, floodgates or bridges are used for 3+ wide hallways. Need a ton of mechanisms though. Floodgates are safer, but bridges use less mechanisms.

Whenever I deconstruct the walls that support my doors, the doors always deconstruct. Is the reason why it works for you that there are additional doors to the side of the one without an adjacent wall? The ones I displace erroneously always get put back into the stock pile.

They absolutely HAVE to be constructed walls, if the walls are natural your doors will deconstruct.  Go try this with a constructed wall and report back with your results...  You should be able to build a freestanding door in the middle of nowhere with this technique.

AAAAAND, just to make sure that nothing has changed in .19, I just went and did some tests and yes, it still works.
