You go back to the fire you passed not too long ago and take a seat there. You improvise some equipment, bandage yourself up, cast a healing spell and eat a quick meal before preparing to go again. You are still injured, but you can take a hit or two before being at risk of collapse (you have 5 FP and 5 HP, for those who understand GURPSish). You also notice a chest in the corner.

You look at the chest and notice a rope attatched to the lid that appears to be going up all the way to the ceiling and into a small hole up there. You can't see anything that it could be attatched to, but the rope is quite tight.

How do you propose we go about disarming this trap?

Hold the rope, but lift the lid, so then there is no difference in tension.

Drag the other chest, that had the bottle on it, here. place plenty of heavy stuff (like rocks) in it. find a rope, and tie it to the rock-filled chest at one end, then to the middle of the other rope. slowly cut the main rope below where the other chest is attached (standing on or behind the unopened chest to avoid whatever will fall).

Sorry, Hubris, I would have gone for your idea (no offence to Ochita, but it is much more imaginative) but you posted your suggestion after I had finished writing up my post.

You grab hold of the rope and carefully open the chest and take a look inside. In there are two magical stone tablets - beautifully adorned with glowing runes that you can't read, but can somehow understand - and a hooded tunic - padded for winter use and with a pattern block printed down the side of it in red. You quickly get these out of the chest before lowering the lid again. Looking more carefully at the tablets, you think that if you were to read them they might have a magical effect. It may also be time to put your money back in your pouch, before it all falls out of the boots again.
