The entirety of gold dug up so far, all made into a cube, would be about the size of an apartment or so.

by far not ...

reserves are somewhat larger that that .. what you talk about is what may be traded in a month by private persons :P

Source: The Perth Mint, guided tour. May have been altered by poor memory. It was something like a 20 foot cube, anyway.

This sounds very interesting. Are we talking 'gold' as in gold alloys that may or may not be pure, at the total amount of the element Au refined by man kind?

Quote from: wikipedia
A total of 165,000 tonnes of gold have been mined in human history, as of 2009.[1] This is roughly equivalent to 5.3 billion troy ounces or, in terms of volume, about 8,500 m³, or a cube 20.4 m on a side. The world consumption of new gold produced is about 50% in jewelry, 40% in investments, and 10% in industry.

So, a 20-meter cube, which is quite a bit more than a 20-foot cube.

National Geographic told me that it would be the size of the Statue of Liberty's base if all melted together.

$305 is a fairly random amount to have compared to 250.

If I stick it in the bank, I will never see it again, my parents will see to that.

Nor will you if you spend it. Just sayin'.

My opinion is that $305 dollars is practically a security deposit on an apartment, or a payment on a cheap car. My opinion is also that if you save it, soon enough that $305 dollars will be $1000 dollars, and you'll have a little bit more wiggle room to be able to blow $50 on a game.

This is all coming from a cash-strapped college student, though.

My concern is that you came here asking for our opinion on what you should do with the money, and yet you are dismissing the popular opinions of "save it" or "invest it" or "donate it" and you're just saying "no I want you to tell me to spend it frivolously"

Which is fine, I guess, but then your title should be "$305 cash, and no idea how to spend it frivolously". Or alternatively, you didn't need to make a thread at all.

Just go to a store (preferably not a major chain, support your local businesses maybe) and wander around until something strikes your fancy.

There's no objective recommendations I can make. I could tell you to buy something I enjoy, maybe.

Buy Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Give some cash to Toady and pretend like you're purchasing 31.19
Buy a Super Nintendo and Earthbound, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, etc.
Buy an N64 and Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros., Perfect Dark, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, etc.
Buy The Orange Box.
Buy Rome Total War.

or something.

Payment? Heck, this is half the price of a cheap car.

I'm gonna go for spend it on a hobby. Do you have a hobby? Spend it on that. Otherwise, get a hobby. Then spend it on the hobby.

He meant a cheeeeeeeep car. Although at that price if you are lucky it will only take $500 to get it working again.

Nah, you should be able to get a decent used Yugo for 500$. They're just 2500$ brand new, after all.

My first three vehicles were about 600-700 dollars (Buick LeSabre, Volvo something or other, Something Tracer).
Each only lasted about 2 years, but still, that's not terrible for the price. The volvo did take an extra 300 and a couple days of work to get running again, BUT I also picked it up for 400, so it balanced out. The Volvo only broke cause I crashed into a guy on the highway, anyways. (cracked radiator, cheaper just to buy a new car than get it repaired, apparently. Well, at least after it caused some other damage without me having noticed the crack...). And I take TERRIBLE care of my vehicles.

My current vehicle cost 2000 and has recently stopped working (the starters gone kaput), but it lasted me three+ years, one of those living out of the thing, so I think I got my money out of that one too :P

I imagine you get get a vehicle that is both cheap AND a piece of crap for even less :P

the key is charity lots. Go a couple of times - took me two or three trips to find most of these.

I plan to buy my father's motorcycle for $800, the family is moving to Utah but im staying here and he can't take it and he wasn't able to sell it so i might have a chance to get it. You can be very lucky any day and find a good deal if you can wait.

Motorcycles are either awesome or terrible investment, depending on your local climate. I'd never buy myself one because I could only ride it for 6 months a year.
