Encrusting Cages?
« on: March 03, 2011, 11:38:43 am »

Is it possible, or is there some tweak to it?  You can encrust crossbow bolts with diamonds but not a cage?

It should be possible.  Cages are furniture.  Put some cages in a furniture stockpile next to the jeweler's shop and then tell the jeweler to encrust furniture with some gem.

Nope, it gives a job cancellation asking for furniture, when I've got a jeweler locked in with gems and cages.

Don't cages actually go to animal stockpiles? I've never noticed them being put into furniture, empty or otherwise.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

They're animal, not furniture, which seems to be the issue here.

Are the cages in a cage trap? If they're loaded in a cage trap they're inaccessible. A cage is furniture and can be decorated just like any barrel, bin, or table so long as its just sitting around and not in a cage trap.

It's not in a cage trap.  Try it yourself.

Strange.  I know I've made gem-encrusted cages before, but that was back in a 40d fortress.  It may have changed since then.

I've done it in 31.16, but haven't done it recently. I usually save all of my gems for finished goods.

You can buy decorated cages as well...

This puts a kink in my titan zoo...  I suppose regular old master quality gold cages will have to do.

Might be a bug, honestly.  If cages were moved out of furniture (and they are, I found out last night), then there's just no job to do it.

Can't believe this oversight hasn't been posted already.  Someone got an account on the bug tracker?

just checking in real quick: you're not trying to decorate built cages, right?

Correct.  I dumped a cage and a red diamond into an area, then ordered the jeweler to pull a lever, locking himself in the area.  Then, un-forbid the cage and diamond, and ordered furniture encrusting.  He grabbed the diamond and gave a cancel.  Just to check, I made an animal stockpile, and he moved the cage to the pile, then refused to encrust it.

They are quick and easy to create... plus, the bug tracker has the 3.20 bug fixes listed, as they are completed.

Anyway, I never encrust anything.
