Manning charged.
« on: March 02, 2011, 07:42:03 pm »

You want to see how ugly, repressive and unjust the "war on terror" can get ? How oppressive and dangerous it can be for Americans ?
Search no longer :  Bradley Manning, the young soldiers who leaked several secret document who gave us a new light on the war in Afganistan, in Iraq and on American Diplomacy as a whole is being accused of "aiding the enemy" and may face live in prison.

After his infamous treatment in the hand of American administration, all for trying to get truth to us, to give a unbiased information on the action of the American Army, he now face a punishment so harsh that if he wasn't American, we would have Clinton giving an hypocrite speech on how human right are important for the US and how this infamy violate them.

And you, Americans, what will you do?

Edit X2 : and another article deconstructing the prosecution better than I ever could, by Glen Greenwald http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/03/03/manning/index.html

I'm going to bust him out.

Be there.

Unless he got the death sentence, you didn't link to an article. If he did, I'm still going to bust him out.

I will continue to do nothing. I'm sorry but I can't be held responsible for any of their actions. I have my own concerns to deal with and all of those concerns are apolitical.

While I feel sorry for the poor freedom fighter, I agree with Eugen. Once the damn feds see the backlash from them killing the guy who told us the REAL conditions in the mid east, not the BS we're likely being spoon fed, they will watch their step more.

In other news, we might even have had the right to this information, under some obscure subsection nobody pays attention to because nobody even considered it of any use at first (Like the starcraft AI that used its miners to heal its units, and caught everyone off-guard). Was wikileaks able to snag these docs before the gov caught them? Or is Manning's sacrifice only to be a martyr?

Meh, doubt that his death will have any real impact on american politics. It would be nice if it did, but i don't see many people really remembering it in five or ten years. The "aiding the enemy" charge, is complete bs.

This isn't the UN's jurisdiction really, and even if it was, the US isn't the worst human rights offender, nor do then have nearly the power required to stop something like this.

Still, It's outrageous that they're considering life in prison or the death penalty over this.

Not really.  He did arguably commit an act of treason, or simply a massive breach of internal security.  The keyword being "arguably", which is why it's a charge and not a sentence.  At least he finally knows what he's actually in solitary confinement for.

The Pentagon Papers will definitely come up in his defense, but it's going to be a circus for sure.

The UN might as well rename it's self "World, minus 3 countries.". It isn't like the EU, where each applicant is considered and may or may not be accepted. It is essentially BS. It could be dissolved and minimal impact would be felt by the world. It is a horrible peacekeeping force, it isn't any sort of economic beacon, and it isn't making in scientific leaps. It does nothing useful, IMHO. Job of world's police force falls to US and UK,  and we do a pretty bad job, but nobody else has the military for it, so all other countries do is bitch. The only economy really doing good right now is the EU, see above. And science isn't being done by just one group. That covers all three big areas of civilization.

I'm not surprised. He commited treason, and most certainly broke the USCMJ.

So yeah. Why are you guys really surprised that he's being killed? He leaked MILITARY information, and he is/was a SOLDIER of the US ARMY.

"Aiding the enemy" is the capital offence, and it's gonna be pretty hard to prove that one.

Also, treason is actually defined the the US constitution, and I don't think Manning's acts fit it.
Quote
Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.
You'd need to do some serious twisting to say that he was actually working for America's enemies.

EDIT: Actually, never mind, I guess you could get him on espionage clauses added later.
