I once found them being sold fairly cheaply in an online "Science Surplus" store. Pretty sure they have a name, and without it I can't seem to find them anywhere. (except possibly thinkgeek. I'll have to check that, thanks for the tip)

What you're thinking of is a "Knife Switch"
Very popular amongst the mad scientist set.

Ah! Bless you! I've been wracking my brain about that one for a while now.

This'd actually make a great art project. Get some backing by some modern art gallery or culture group and make a good verbose description and it could potentially be a great publicity stunt for DF.

Dang. None of the artists I know could pull this off. They all use more traditional media, or are terribly undwarfy souls.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Maybe you could try your local metalworking artshop?

Perhaps we should build them out of legos :D

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

Two one-foot lengths of 2x4. Two one-inch lengths of 2x4. One broom handle. One eight inch bolt. One nut. Power drill. Wood drill bit. Nails. Hammer.

Code: [Select]

= O =
==I==

Tah-dah.

My suggestion:

Sign:
Pull the Lever

doing so flips the sign to say:
