Stupid Burial
« on: April 10, 2007, 05:10:00 pm »

It never ceases to amaze me how dense these dorfs are.

The thing is, Logem Ralcog died by falling down the chasm.  This coffin is for my former metalsmith, whose corpse continues to rot on the chasm bridge while the other dorfs "attend party."

I honestly don't want to know how they're going to get Ralcog's body out of the chasm.

I think they bury dwarfs in chronological order, even without bodys.

Or in my case, bury my first dwarf (Aptly named "Heliopios") without any remains, or equipment.

He died in a useless magma accident.

That is correct. They "bury" dwarfs even though their bodies have long been... well, gone, in various ways lol. Think of the coffin more like a memorial than an actual grave.

"Dedicated to the memory of" instead of "The resting place of"

Yeah, I think dwarves that are dead continue to think, and their only thought is to look for a place to rest.  However, they should only do this when they have at least one item linked to them.  Perhaps these linkages aren't being updated properly.

Now I stop and read that in amazement, allowing imagination to run...

They haunt around looking for a resting place so long as a personal item of theirs exists? Creepy. ^^

Out of curiosity, would it be possible to program in other thoughts like "haunt living" or "rise from grave"? The item linkage thing might be a good way to handle liches, as well.

Sure, there's a whole v1 ghost arc up on dev, though it was mostly gonna be for after the fortress has ended.  That is a main reason I keep the data around though.  Keeping around dead deer from 10 years before is stranger.
