Why not add flails to DF?
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:17:11 pm »

You know those spikey balls on a chain?
They are availble as traps (at least this is how i imagine spiked balls) but is there any reason there are no hand held versions?
(at least in the official releases)

Example of a flail.

The More Weapons thread is already talking about adding all kinds of weapons, and I think SirHoneyBadger went and made a list of about 50 of them, so you might as well add to that one.

Also, if you want your weapons now, keep in mind that whatever weapons you can come up with a way to stat out are available to you through modding.  There's even a "modding questions" thread to help you out if you need it.

To be more specific about the topic, we already have morningstars, whips, and scourges.  Flails don't always have spikey balls on the end, but are just anything with a hinge or chain, so a scourge is functionally a type of flail.

EDIT: Haha, there are already flails in the game. Nevermind, then.

Implementing new weapons isn't really high on Toady's list, I would imagine, since he focuses on adding features, not content.

If you asked nicely at the modding forum, they might make one for you for the time being.

Since there are already flails in the game, all you have to do is just steal one from a goblin's corpse, or if you are too impatient, just mod the dwarven civ to have the ability to manufacture them.

Personally I think Toady will add new weapons once he focuses more on martial arts.

Afterall that is when the weapons start to really differ themselves.

That's an obvious photoshopping of the dwarf from D&D's monster manual.  You can tell the flail/morningstar part of it doesn't even look like the rest of the picture.  It's originally a warhammer, and doesn't make the picture look so unbalanced.

It's not an argument against what you have said at all.

K... Cause I see him looking up in much the same way that Wile E. Coyote looks down after he's walked 10ft off the cliff, and then POW giant metal ball right in the head.

That's got to be close to a ton of metal, right?

Didn't notice the flails on the wiki.

Wonder if they work like spiked balls...

Wooden flails should be the backbone of elven melee weaponry. They're the only wooden weapon dwarves wouldn't sneer at (aside from the bows, of course).

Except that a Flail is a threshing tool. Symbolically it may be considered an EVIL weapon.

Which either means no elf would use it or that it would be an extremely common weapon of death!

TBH i dont see the point of gwarves not being able to make flails.
Flails are heavy lumps of metal on a chain.
And they menace (and actually hurt things) with spikes of "insert your material here".
