[38a] Sloooowww!
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:59:00 am »

Hallo, Toady! It's my computer fault, or the new version Fortress Mode is much slower than the latest? Speed drop is awful, even with few dwarves around. Perhaps something amiss in the pathfinding code, since there are no new features in the Fortress Mode. Anyways, thanks for this wonderful game!!!

How can he know if it's your computer or not unless you post the specs?

Already checked. There are other users complaining about lowered FPS. Plus, I tried the old version and it's faster. The power of logic, my friend...

did'nt toady say if you experianced slow fps then you should lower the number of CIVs?.

I may be wrong but i think thats the problem as there is the new army arc and each civ uses it i think so its bound to use up some cpuness.

I have usual fps however I am having lag spikes. The fps drops randomly, and where it's 32 usually at times it drops to 11, 12 fps. It is usually when caravan arrives, but this is the same time ambushers and thieves show up, so it could be related.

Toady said that the RAM requirement has been upped.

I think that it would be nice too see what your specs actually are.

Mine is a Santa Rosa-based laptop with a C2D@2.0GHz, 1024Mb RAM, and a GF8400MG. DF runs reasonably well (and fast) in fort mode, but adventuring in large towns or near large caves incurs relatively severe lag.

AMD 1.79Ghz processor (AMD likes to state that this is not the "effective" speed of their processors, which they claim is roughly tqwice as high as the number provided).  448Mb RAM.  I get lag, much more than I did in the last version.  I haven't tried fort mode yet, just adventure mode.

The machine I used to play DF on got ~8 FPS with seven dwarves on a small map in the previous version.  It would die if I installed this version on it.

You probably mean twice as lower than what is written?

I'd never play this game if I got around 8 FPS on startup without even having dug in the mountain yet.

If I've read the dev log right, memory requirement been upped solely because of world generation. I don't think there was a mention about the fortress mode about upping memory requirement.

If you lag so much at startup, may I suggest you reduce the size of your fortress on the embark screen? This should help you a lot.

As far as I am concerned, I think the new version is slightly faster for me...

I also go incredibly slow, but I have more civs than standard.  Lowering the number of civs does seem to help however.

If you do some entity modding it's probably a good idea to reduce the number of civs in each entity entry so it evens out to about the same number of individual civs as in vanilla DF.

Oh and 2.16 GHz, only 512 DDR SDRAM with an ATI Radeon 9250 gfx card here.

Graphic card barely do any difference for DF.

You seem to have a better computer than me. However, if it's that slow it is probably because it's a celeron. I'm having good results here with a slower CPU, same amount of ram but standard and not DDR.
