I'm running DF .31.19 on a Samsung N150 netbook, with Xubuntu 10.10 installed as the OS.

In the 'prepare for the journey carefully' screen, my '+' key will not work to give dwarves skills. That is to say, in the item selection screen, it works fine, and it will work in the nickname input string field. Just not specifically in the menu screen that assigns skills to dwarves.

I am really, profoundly confused here, and I have no idea what is causing this issue. I've tested the key in a few other menus in DF as well, and it seems to work fine, although being unable to assign my starting dwarves any skills has sort of killed my desire to play, and therefore my patience to test the key in every menu I can find.

I submitted a bug report, but I'm not really sure if it's a Dwarf Fortress error or a Xubuntu error, although the key seems to work just fine in the other programs I have installed. In any case, if anyone has any theories as to what is causing this issue, or an idea for some sort of work-around, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Just to ensure it isn't a really simple answer...

Are you sure it is valid to add skills to this dwarf?  As in, you have the points to spend, and you aren't already up to the maximum?  You actually have the cursor over on the skills, and not on the dwarf?

Other than that, are you sure that you haven't somehow rebound your keys in some way?  I'm not sure if there's a specific keybinding for that one function, but maybe something was changed?

I know he's right because it has happened to me, too, I swear. It's the most frustrating thing. What I don't think Roflcopter realizes is that when this is an issue, it tends to be game-wide, too. Not just on said selection screen. Also, * and / tend to not work in their default setting either.

I haven't had the problem since .18, except for one case which was fixed by remapping the keys to something else through the key remapping menu. Before then, it seemed to crop up randomly when I had just downloaded DF -- as crazy as that sounds, because computers are by nature highly consistent.

EDIT:

NO WAIT I JUST REMEMBERED HOW I LEARNED TO FIX IT BEFORE .18.

You go in the remapping menu and remap - and + as "minus" and "plus" instead of "-" or "+". When you hit "-" or "+" to remap a key, there should be two types of remapping, and you need to remap them to the remapping types that aren't active.

Freeform, you've confused me mightily, but I think I figured out what you were saying, and it worked.

I re-mapped all instances of '-' and '+' with 'minus' and 'plus' respectively, and then launched DF... Which did nothing. But then when I went back and re-set all instances of 'minus' and 'plus' to '-' and '+' again, it magically started working.

I am still mightily confused as to what was going on there, but in any case, it works now, so thanks!

I had it so that I couldn't add skills to anyone, but it turned out that the game had already spent all my embark points on items. Sold a few and everything worked again.

That only works if I can make them into a tri-force.

@jimi12: It's not a bug, just you not reading your available points (zero, in that case). It also happened to me...
