Military is taking a class in badass
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:00:43 pm »

This isn't some "Pro-War" propoganda.

I was stalking the internet and wiki when I found this. I thought it was cool, then I saw this at the end of said articel:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I know its wikipedia, but I personally think the military would be significantly more badass after this, dispite the fact that I am somewhat againist war. Thoughts?

I'm sure it fits well into the whole "future of urban warfare" planning.

That said, I don't imagine it become standard training for the American military. You have to be very physically fit to be able to Parkour without snapping your limb off. And even professionals screw up and pay the price for a 20 foot leap.

If they can do parkour while carrying the standard 200+ lbs of gear, that would indeed be incredibly bad ass.

You don't need to give everyone parkour training. I could see it becoming part of the curriculum of the Commando's or maybe the Rangers or the special forces.

Also, I thought the French paramilitary units were using parkour techniques long before it became an English word, or am I mistaken here?

I thought the whole purpose of trainning someone to do something was so they don't screw up doing it.

How much emphasis have militaries ever placed on training their footsoldiers in pole-vaulting?  None?  Think about why there might be a reason.

Here's a hint: Militaries have two considerations parkour enthusiasts don't: they have lots of vehicles, and don't want to leap around in the open where you'll get shot.  Quake-style bunnyhopping doesn't help you much in a real gunfight.

While incredibly badass, it's also pretty much useless. Except maybe for fitness, and I believe they already got training programs for that.

Well it could be useful for some things, like paramedics who don't carry much around running all over the place helping people, or you know it could be used in more covert operations to reach hardly accesable areas.
And IIRC parkour itself started as an obstacle course in the french military or something and was then developed out of that by that Belle guy.
Also this again reminds me that i really need to start training -.-

Quake-style bunnyhopping doesn't help you much in a real gunfight.

If you could actually bhop Quake-style while still maintaining expert aim, it would help you a great deal indeed. By the time anyone could draw a bead on you they'd be dead.

Still, parkour isn't something ordinary humans do while wearing 40 (not 200, lol) pounds of gear.

Even without a full pack, 40 lbs sounds a little light. Does that include grenades, sidearm, water, tools or NBC gear? or is that just armor, helmet, rifle and ammo?

edit: fixing some horrifically bad grammar on my part.

40 lbs is standard combat load about....it was when I was in the Marine Corps at least (bout 2 years ago)

Consists of vest, ammo, grenades, weapon, basic supplies, and water.

Travel load with all your gear is about 80.

And I can see many applications for this...though not battlefield parkour moves lol.

Its actually perfect for battlefield...teaches environmental agility (just hopping over small obstacles and things of the such) as well as getting the body fit for more combat likely spurts of extreme exertion.

Well parkour is meant to be a uncompetive, fast way to get around.

I do imagine it being widely used by scouts. A normal, heavly armed soldier..... not so much.

Like I said, I think it has some applications for urban warfare. Not sure how much parkour you'd be doing when there are shooters in every window, but hey. They'd be like "Did you just see that?"

Sprinting while carrying 40 lbs would get to you. Trust me, I've used sleds with a good 50 pounds and it drags you down considerably. 200 would be unmaintainable.

Contrary to popular belief, weaponry really isn't that heavy. Considering that the M4 weighs only 7 pounds. Ammo, while heavy in large amounts, is bearable when kept in small amounts (depending on the caliber).

Sadly, FPS shooters use aim adjustment.
Otherwise long shots would be damn near impossible for anyone who isn't extremely skilled.

I'm not even talking about autoaim, either.
