Melancholy dwarves and coffins.
« on: February 28, 2011, 03:21:23 pm »

If you have coffins set up that are available for burial, melancholy dwarves should claim one, quietly slide open the lid, lay down in it, put the lid back in place, and wait to die. Seems like a properly emo thing to do, to me. Maybe if you view the building with Q, it could say something like "Urist McEmo can be heard sobbing inside." Or maybe they'd write emo poetry.

Just a thought.

Why not. Seems fair enough.

Sounds good to me. The dwarf is going to die soon anyway, why make his death count as one more hauling job. XD

Only if they make a great big whining deal out of it.  They should tell everyone they know that they are going to do so, and if nobody stops them, and they put themselves in the coffin, and a few days pass, they should get out and tell other dwarves how he's "really doing it, totally serious this time".

Sudden desire to make a dwarf depressed and name him "Count Urist".

I think they should do SOMETHING... this is as good as anything.

Throwing themselves off stuff, drowning, suffocating themselves in coffins, hanging themselves on rope, throwing themselves on their swords....

Could be procedural, based on their likes, why they are melancholy, and what their skills are.

I have read a lot about melancholy dwarves jumping from cliffs, but unfortunately I haven't seen it myself. And I have even constructed suicide towers for maximum splatterage...

What you want is, like, a five-z tower. That way they stay mostly intact.

They could also go to weapon traps, and go unconscious.

what if an available coffin would make the melancholic dwarf prepare his burial rites and then a lot of dwarfs go to his burial etc?

Meh. Doesn't feel properly emo to me. Slitting your wrists, yeah, but getting chopped into bite-sized chunks? Seems to me that most emos are too pussy to try that.

Maybe he'd give a long-winded overly dramatic speech...

Urist McEmo: And now, you assholes, because you didn't bring me a purple gem when I asked for one, I'm going to lay down in this coffin and stay in there until I DIE. That's right. I hope you all feel really fucking ba-
Urist McCarpenter: *throws plump helmets at Urist McEmo* Get on with it! I have some bins to make, you stupid turd!
Urist McEmo: ;_;

Yeah, dwarf emo involves trying to jump off a balcony overlooking the fortress with a steel cheesewire noose around your neck to cut off your own head, and then aiming to land your head on top of a goblin or elf or some noble you didn't like.

As opposed to the elves, goblins, or nobles that you DO like?

Perhaps I should say "dislike the most".  You only get one shot, after all.
