Thanks, I should try redoing the task, then.

I've read you can have animal explorers, but how would you go about doing this? I thought it was Pit/Pond, but that's difficult because there's a zone limit, and would require tons of micromanaging.

There's a stupidly simple solution to all of this probably, and as normal, I'm missing it.

After you get them down, you can use meeting areas to have them ge where you want, since animals congregate in meeting areas.

pit - set pit info - assign animals you want to drop.

I once dropped a kitten into a cavern with ~20 forgotten beasts, a GSC, and a lot of other stuff in it.

if your gonna pit war dogs, do more then 1 at a time, i did 2 at once, and they almost killed a forgotten beast, when i accidently did them one at a time, the forgotten beast curb stomped them both

also, since this thread seems to be about artifacts...will mooded dwarves/nobles only ask for stuff you actually have access to? thats how one of my previous forts failed, a possessed dwarf wanted cloth and i had plant and animal, just not silk...said forgotten beast from above was wandering around the caves, so when i opened it up to send people to gather webs he came in -.-;;

Experience shows they usually demand what you don't have, at least when it comes to cloth. If you have plant they want silk, if you have silk they want wool, if you have all three you're probably missing something else (like bones).

In 31.19 you can assign zones and pen animals in them. Not sure if they'll pen animals from above, though.

I always buy a few bolts of undyed silk cloth at the beginning. That and leather, for early moods.

Too bad you can't buy uncut gems. I've lost a lot of dwarves to that mood required item in 0.31.19 due to not having anything suitable (no gems found for many, many years).

Doesn't work for uncut gems, bud oddly enough does work for cut gems. Raw glass is asked for specifically in moods 'raw...green...' and isn't related to raw gems.

If it's version 0.31.19, it's remotely possible (not sure if Toady added it yet) that he might want wool cloth.

Definitely active,  I had a mason snap because I didn't have wool cloth.  Had silk and plant.

Ok, long story short:

The woodworker went insane. Eventually got my cloth, though. Then my mayor had a strange mood and made a vest, and my metalworker made...

A bracelet!!! /facepalm

A really nice bracelet, though. It was engraved with four pictures, and had a lot of platinum.

So I lost one, but got 2 more...

And while this was happening, I had to fend off a siege, an ambush, a Forgotten Beast (my first), and about 6 thieves. Fun. Although I never actually faced off against the FB. The antmen and Cave swallow men killed it. The one who killed it now has a name and is friendly.

The "cannot find path" spam is from them picking a web in an unrevealed area (probably).
Try revealing the entire cavern.

I realize the point is moot for this particular artifact, but in the future, the easy solution is to forbid all webs from the stocks menu (listed under thread) and then unforbid only the ones that you can see/want them to collect. This is also a great way to keep your web collectors from wandering off to the far corners of the caverns before you've secured them for civilian travel.

I have also done this by assigning my collector to a burrow and then increasing the burrow as I expanded my area of control of the caverns, but the forbidding way is significantly easier. Not my idea, though; someone suggested it in the past on these forums.

Oh. /facepalm

I knew about the webs in the stocks menu!

/Bangs head off of computer desk

My stupidity actually rivalled the dwarves for once.
