Help with an Artifact... (final update)
« on: February 28, 2011, 01:19:13 pm »

Ok, so most of my artifacts have been COMPLETELY worthless so far, what with the animal dissectors and whatnot getting strange moods. My problem: My legendary woodworker went into a strange mood and he won't go get the materials! I don't want to lose him to a strange mood, (already lost a migrant weaponsmith) and I didn't think anyone besides metalsmiths were picky.

He wants:
Wood - (forest)
(Already gotten)
 - stacked cloth
 - shining bars of metal
 - square blocks
 - shining bars of metal
 - a quarry
The only thing that I can imagine is that he wants cave spider cloth instead of pig tail cloth, which I have. Any suggestions?

He wants silk cloth.  When a dwarf is making an artifact, he always picks either plant or silk cloth, and won't accept the wrong type.  He usually won't tell you which he wants.  The only way to know is if he's asking for cloth and won't take the type you have.

If it's version 0.31.19, it's remotely possible (not sure if Toady added it yet) that he might want wool cloth.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Sorry, should of mentioned I'm playing 31.18. At least until the Caravan Arc is finished. But thanks for the tips! I'll have to dig down to the first cavern level.

Note to self: Backup save.

In 31.18 Toady fixed the problems with silk cloth by having the dwarven caravan sell a few bins of them at the starter year. You need to buy those few bins if you don't want to gather the silk yourself.

Outside of that, dig down and collect it yourself.
Square blocks are stone blocks.
Shining bars of metal twice may want two types of methods, most likely not.
Make sure none of your rocks are forbidden. I have had this happened before.

The dwarven caravan has had silk cloth for me since I started playing.

I don't recall the caravans having silk when I started playing, just pigtail cloth/thread. I don't know what version they started bringing silk, but it's definitely there to be used in 31.18.

Next fort, embark with 1 or 2 units of silk as insurance.

I always buy a few bolts of undyed silk cloth at the beginning. That and leather, for early moods.

Too bad you can't buy uncut gems. I've lost a lot of dwarves to that mood required item in 0.31.19 due to not having anything suitable (no gems found for many, many years).

I always keep some gems uncut. Mainly the loweer value ones, such as Lapis Lazulis.

It could also be that he wants a specific type of metal bar, I've had one dwarf waiting in the workshop until I made a black bronze bar which was one of his likes.  After that he rushed over to loot it and gathered the rest of the material.

Happens pretty rarely but then of course you won't notice if you already have the specific item type he wants.

Got a new problem now...

This is my first time digging into a cavern, and I turned off auto-collect. My dwarves isolated a nice little place with a couple of spider webs, un-suspended the labor, and now they won't do anything. It's right there, but they're not getting it.

Weaving labors are activated and everything, but it just says: Urist McDwarf cancels Collect Webs: could not find path.

Other dwarves have been in the area, so there's a clear path, but they won't do anything. I just get spammed with the same messages.

Any (more) suggestions?

Also, thanks for the help so far! I'm redesigning my embark strategy for another such scenario.

P.S. The reason I like this area so much is that there's about 6 pure or near-pure layers of pure obsidian on the surface.

The "cannot find path" spam is from them picking a web in an unrevealed area (probably).
Try revealing the entire cavern.

Oh... So just more dwarven idiocity. Well, I have, like, a month before my dwarf goes insane, and there's no way I can map out the rest of the cavern right now. Ant man civ (which I lost a dorf to because I didn't forbid their meager spoils, stupid) and cave swallow man civ. Only half of my military is equipped with decent weapons, and only one has a full set of armor.

So, is there any workaround? Or is my woodworker doomed?

Kitten explorers, or wardogs if you have them. I always bring 3 female and one male wardog so I'll have an entire army of expendable teeth.

I believe walling off the parts of the cavern you don't want to use and reassigning the collect silk task makes them only collect the webs in your walled off area.
