Tale on the forum is that metals are very scarce in .19, and the word on if this'll change or not I haven't heard. Then again there was a post in Gameplay about a guy hitting some metal in the first cavern that's normally found in much lower layers.

Embarking with shallow metals nets you a greater chance of finding some sweet sweet limonite or whatever.

And don't forget that Cinnabar, Microcline, Bauxite and Cobaltite now count as 'metals' according to worldgen and the map.

Which is rather annoying. I embarked on a site looking for deep METALS. Even if they were something like Bismuth I could have sold them and kept the glorious Dwarven Empire going. But no, I have worthless ROCKS. I'm not one to speak out but... WHY TOADY, WHY.

Legendary stonecrafters go! Make money to buy metal!

"But they'll be the same value as crafts made from other rocks, so what's the po-"
"SHUT UP, I SAID WE'LL BE RICH!"

So i have finally allowed myself to stop deleting and making new forts and just settle with one, now i never had anything truly happen to me before this fort. its a great feeling when you get master crafted items, dwarfs are in odd moods and crafting bizarre items, hell i havent even experienced real combat except for some skeleton marmots so that even makes this more fort more interesting for me, its just nice to finally experience some of the great things in DF instead of reading them on the forum. only gripe is i have made my first real attempt at a fort in .31.19 and metal is as everyone knows ...missing shall i say?

I still use .18 for this reason.

"Boring Military" as in, "I can't learn it, so it's boring"? You notice you commited the same error you were complaining about, right?

I have learned it, and it doesn't matter, it's still completely uninteresting to solve threats to my dwarves by just pushing stacks of dwarves at the problem, and then letting some conflict I can't see be resolved without any real input on my part, since I can't really do much besides wait to see who winds up living, and maybe reading some obscenely long and uninteresting combat report.

Any enjoyment that might come from setting up uniforms is more than compensated for in devising large killzones by setting up mazes filled with spikes or flood traps to funnel enemies through.

And it's not an error, either.  I am showing the opposite extreme on purpose so that people can see just how absurd it is that people denegrate others who dare enjoy the game in a different way than "no graphics, no traps, no engineering, no crossbows, axelords only, FINAL DESTINATION" are obviously just too stupid to understand how to play "the real DF".  I can't go very far on these general or fortress mode boards without seeing much of this same tripe.

I have just as much right to stand up for my playstyle as you do, and you don't have the right to tell people they are just incapable of understanding if they don't agree with you.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.

We each have our own reasons for playing DF. The "real" DF is defined by those reasons. Personally I'm in it for the persistent world that I don't have to join an MMO for (my internet speed sucks). Other than bugs, everything else is secondary.

I tend to switch forts as soon as a new version is released. 10 years is about the longest I've managed. But it is fun seeing dorfs level up and grow up from children.
