Tower Obsession

I've realized that ever since 40d I've had this obsession to build towers which reach the highest z-level of the map. Doesn't matter if it's stone, ice, wood blocks, or native gold blocks looted from a goblin building (heh). They've never done anything useful, except stand there, so I wonder if other tower builders have actually found a use for them.

I build towers only if I'm planning to flood the world with Magma.

... dropping it from the tower, of course.

I enjoy getting a small army of masons going and living in towers, having the dwarfs build up in obscure patterns that can't be good for path finding.

i cast obsidian towers.
so it's both aboveground, and natural stone, which can be engraved into master images, preventing cave adaption, while being free from the threat of building destroyers.

The only reason i ever built towers is for apartments or if the embark is particularly hostile then an encased tower city

On lower levels: put marksdwarves/catapults/ballistae for defence against ambushes and sieges. On higher levels put same ones to shoot buzzards. ^^
Also, make huge waterfalls/magmafalls.
Or nobles apartments. Library. Build whole city.

I too love building towers much more than I have ideas for their use. Someday I wish to build a gigantic steel drill to the heavens, but the geometry needed for it is out of my league for now. Currently I have an idle 10 z-level tower in need of inspiration.

I love building towers, but only solid magma cast towers.  Go dwarven or go home. ;)
