Dwarf Fortress File Depot
« on: February 12, 2008, 03:50:00 pm »

The free file hosting site I've been working on for DF is now officially open:

Dwarf Fortress File Depot (DFFD)

This is to provide a better place to host your DF related files than the usual annoying free file hosting sites like Rapidshare, MegaUpload, and the like. Those sites are generally ad-saturated, require a timer countdown or security text entry, have download limits for individual IP addresses, and will eventually delete your files.

General info about the site is here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/about.php

If you have another place you use as the main download location for your files, feel free to just use the DFFD site as a mirror location. As long as it's DF related and not illegal for me to host (such as copyrighted songs), it should be welcome.

All standard file types you might need to upload should be accepted, along with CMV and FDF-MAP files. If anyone comes across a file type which it won't let you upload, let me know and I'll probably add it in.

Also, if anyone has other suggestions for the site, you can post them here or through the site's contact form.

How do you stop random peaple on the net to discover this and use it for completely non DF-related stuff thus clogging up all bandwidth and memory?

Three things.
One, if people start doing that, I can block that person's account and/or IP address. Since each account needs a unique working e-mail address, someone would have to keep making new e-mail addresses to try again each time.
Two, I might set up some people as moderators to help watch for such things and delete them when they pop up.
Three, I'll quote from the About page:
quote:
Currently all registered users are allowed to upload files, though this may change to a simple permission request system (where people requesting it get permanent upload access) if the open upload policy is abused too much.

I have another rather large game file hosting site (almost 3TB bandwidth per month used so far) which works on that principle, where people have to request permanent upload access with an indication of what they plan to upload (which weeds out 99% of the troublemakers). If need be, I can switch to that sort of system.

Splendid idea! This'll be excellent for those tiny save files that need to be tossed about for succession games, I bet.  ;)

I must also say thanks for this.  Newbies to dwarf fortress would find it easier to find mods and things. It should be handy for all them succession games out there too.

Very nice. I've stuck several of the minor mods I made up there.
