Ballistae?
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:05:53 pm »

So this one time elves whined about me wasting trees while trading me wooden armor. This hypocrisy has infuriated me, and I would like to know if there would be a way to launch whole trees, or at least giant sharpened logs. Also, some mod  with friction would be awesome if it let the projectile burst into flames on the way.

Dunno about the mod, but we do have these:

About the flames: I seem to recall it was a ballista catching fire that finally did in BoatMurdered.

Yep, ballistae will work for that, and this thread about weapon modifications may be useful. I doubt the results will be as good as with bolts since ballista arrows don't generally stick into targets as much as blast through them.

Purely wooden ballista arrows are pretty pathetic penetration-wise though. I think I've seen them blocked by leather cloaks. I would at least put some sort of metal arrowhead on them.

The point is to fire wood at the elves, for sheer sadistic joy.  I vote do it, as long as you put it atop your existing defense and don't rely entirely on the balista.  Be aware that siege engine operators will run away from enemies, so it gets interesting.

I believe that even "iron" arrows actually use wood, just with the addition of an iron arrowhead.

They do. I'd recommend steel arrowheads for maximum non-consentual-penetrating goodness.
