Rats!  I didn't realize this had already started.

Probably don't have the time for it anyway.  >:|  But you guys have my support!  Go, go!

EDIT:  Is this going to happen every month?

I think these are happening every month.  You don't need to start right away either, I'm not starting till a bit later in the month myself.

The "official" 7DRL Challenge started on the 5th, but this is a separate entity.

I'll probably be starting on the 14th, if I can come up with an idea. :P

In my spare time before I start I'm going through that excellent python libtcod tutorial you posted.  Its pretty impressive how much you can get done in so little code using it.  :)  Nice easy way for me to pick up some python skills as well, as I haven't really done much python programming before.

The whole month, there's still a lot of 7-day blocks left in this month, so go ahead and start.

Some of us are doing it in the same timeframe as the "official" 7drl.

Speaking of which... DAMN IS IT WEDNESDAY ALREADY?! FFFFFUUUU....

Hey, can you start listing the submissions in the OP? I'd rather not have to sift through the topic every time I want to try a new fangled roguelike.
I'm just putting this here, while this is still going on, and not ended.

They'll be listed this time, yeah. In fact, we should be getting our first submissions in the next couple of days... how's it going, Siquo?

Still having brain-block. It's times like these I'm glad for RogueBasin's articles section. :P

I don't suppose anyone has a list of commonly used ascii characters in roguelikes?  Most of the ones I've played have had tiles and I get the feeling there are commonly used characters to represent things like doors and wands and potions.

I'm probably going to start on my 7DRL on monday.  :)

It does!

Edit:

This should help: http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Nethack is one of the biggest rls, so if you use symbold from that and it is different from the norm, it should be excused.

Excellent.  This is exactly what I need.  Thanks!

I have to confess that I got delayed one too many times. I also was constantly running into situations where I had the feeling the tools I was using were pretty crappy compared to what a native library could offer, so I think I'll be focusing on that next.

I did a dual-entry for the 7drl and the bay12 march competition - Mad Mage.  The !sdrawkcaB element is that you start with over 250 scrolls and potions which are all identified, but as you go through the game you'll slowly forget them.

Forgotten items have a 50% chance of just getting a ' ? ? ? ' added to the real name and a 50% chance of being misidentified as an entirely different item.  So a Scroll of Mass Death could become 'Scroll of Mass Death???' or 'Scroll of Friendship???'.

The inventory system is a little weird in that you have a pack with space for 256 items, but you can only access the 'top 8' items.  Periodically, your pack shifts around as you move, changing those 8 items. Plus, you can stash a few items here-and-there on your static clothes.  You can hide a scroll or a potion under your hat, one in each boot, etc.  There's a strategic element of moving your semi-random pack items into more stable locations elsewhere on your body if they're spells you think you'll need soon.

Game balance is a little off, so you'll generally want to either avoid enemies or blow them away with overpowered spells.  The game in general is pretty buggy.  Save a few powerful Cold Blasts (or Kill, perhaps) for the end boss.  The RNG is seeded by your name and which options you click on the title screen, so try something different if you keep crashing early on.

I seem to be crashing whenever I try to look in my pack, no matter what seed I use. Running Vista.

Other than that, though, awesome. I'll go add it to the OP. :D

I just tried it in Windows 7 and got the same crash when viewing the Pack.  Looks like cross-compatibility might be harder than I previously thought...

Scratch that, it works in XP compatibility mode. Many more scrolls! :P

I finally have a brilliant idea for this, I'll be starting sometime tomorrow for sure.
