I think non-metagaming comes from extensive practice playing D&D style games. You need to compartmentalize what your character knows vs. what you as a player know. It's more difficult as a referee because you have to compartmentalize for each NPC. I like to group NPCs by what they know: for example, this NPC is a "regular townsfolk" type of knowledge set. If he learns something extra, he might join a new knowledge set or I might need to make a new one for him. This isn't something like a list I write down, it's just how I think about it.

Anyway, just play the game. That's what it comes down to. Can you play a computer game without min-maxing your character? If so, you can probably compartmentalize enough to do this.

I almost never min-max characters, unless I am testing something, and even then I don't normally play them...And that knowledge group thing... I might have to steal that..
