Does grazing mean we can no longer have zoos?
« on: February 27, 2011, 05:13:39 am »

Earlier I had stuffed three Water Buffalo in a cage, since I wanted to slaughter them later but didn't want to put them out to pasture, and I got a message that they had all starved to death. Since animals can now starve to death in cages (apparently) does this mean that we can no longer have herbivorous animals in our zoos?

That would be a real shame if it were the case.

Sure seems like it.

We need the ability to feed animals (as a job with intent, not just by setting them out to pasture), and/or the ability for dwarves to admire animals (and objects, really) in a more flexible manner (so you could have more open zoos).

Also perhaps have muddied tiles grow grass / cave moss? Or does that work already?

You can still have zoos, it's just that you'll need to irrigate an entire z level to have enough grass to feed the animals.

You could start a zoo and end up with a natural history museum, I'm sure no one would mind.

Yes, but underground stone doesn't.

Dwarven taxidermy, a new use for animal and fish dissectors.

Urist has admired a completely sublime stuffed elf lately.

I believe Toady said that haymaking was planned but not yet implemented.  When it is dwarves will be able to feed caged animals.

In the meantime, you can still use caged goblins and trolls for your zoos.

Sigging that, if you don't mind.

Anywho, hopefully hay-making will make it into the game within another update or two. Zoos are a nice addition to forts; one of the more characterful structures you can make.

None of the cool animals starve anyways.  Hydra, Dragons, Titans, Elves, none of these will starve.  Great for zookeeping!
