Stop Vermin Reproducing Exponentially!

Using version .19

I have a nice little kingdom setup ... the problem, there are tons of vermin remains scattered all around! I tried DUMPing the lot, but new ones are spawned quickly. Now, the 1st level of my fortress is covered in gray squirrel and rat remains (and a few bat remains). One tile can have as many as 20 remains.

I tried setting tons of animal traps (and baited them). The traps managed to catch a few vermin, but it didn't alleviate the situation.  I even purchased a ton of cats from the caravans to thwart the vermin. Still, no stopping these vermin from taking over my fortress. Not sure what else to do ...

I'm looking for a mod that will reduce the number of the vermin to a manageable level. Just removing the remains does nothing (as new remains popup just as fast). I saw a mod for a crematorium ... but that will not stop this vermin spread.

NOTE: This is the second game I've started where this has happened. So I'm assuming it's a bug. If it's not, I'm still annoyed and want to stop it - even if I have to mod the game.

Please help!

Vermin breed in the current version. This way you can grow bees and cave spiders. You could give them ITEMCORPSE which turns into a gas.

try tweaking the "POPULATION_NUMBER" tag
e.x. for large roaches
Code: [Select]
[POPULATION_NUMBER:250:500]to
Code: [Select]
[POPULATION_NUMBER:25:50]
or if you want to get rid of vermin altogether you could take out an organ in their raws or increase the "HOMEOTHERM" tag to something above the melting point of whatever they're made of

EDIT: or you could make the vermin useful and give them the tag
[ITEMCORPSE]
e.x.
[ITEMCORPSE:ROUGH:NO_SUBTYPE:INORGANIC:AMETHYST]

or give them the
"NOSMELLYROT" tag so theres no miasma when they rot

Thanks ammy55. I'll try the population fix.

By the laws of mathematics, anything that breeds will do so exponentially. I hope you're aware of this.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Yes, population numbers have nothing to do with actual breedings, they are for spawning out of the map.

Humans in most of the developed world breed at below replacement level. Sorry for ruining your attempt to look smart.

Yeah, the population fix didn't work. Anyone else have a solution for this?

It doesn't matter; the growth (or decline) is still exponential in nature. If breeding occurs below the replacement rate, the growth trend is similar except declining instead of rising.

I have a solution that hasn't been said yet...
Flooding the area with magma, destroying the remains AND killing all the vermin.
Problem solved, the dorfy way.

Would be a good way ... but the problem is all the way on the surface, and the magma pool is about 20 levels down.

Some questions...
1. Will this cause problems to an existing game? Will it crash because its looking for info on a specific creature?
2. By removing one from the raw ... will the game automatically replace the vermin with another?
3. Will this cause some ecological issues?  If you removed spiders from the real world, insects would take over the world!

I read somewhere of anti-vermin creature (other than cats). Things that prey on certain vermin. Like spiders would prey on insects.  What are the predators for gray squirrels, rats and bats?  Maybe I could just add those to the raw ....  could that possibly work?

However, since the cats aren't taking care of the problem, I dont see how more creatures will
