Noble Demands
« on: August 26, 2006, 08:23:00 pm »

My Trade Minister is currently demanding an Obsidian Cabinet in his room.

Is there any way that demands can be limited to things that can actually be specified with a build order? "dark stone" covers a lot of ground, particularly at this late point in the game where there's a metric ton of every type of stone sitting in my stockpiles. I've had four masons working continuously since early Winter and it's now mid-Spring with not a single Obsidian cabinet resulting.

Could be worse. I've had nobles mandate the production of items of specific types of bone, such as say cave crocodile bone. When the single cave crocodile ever seen in the fortress had died and rotted away like three years ago.

Aye, that's a mandate though -- those go away. Still, that's pretty tall order you got there.

You could perhaps create a building using obsidian close by to the mason workshop, then dismantle it shortly after, leaving the obsidian sitting there. Then once a mason looks for more materials, it should be the first thing to be picked up.

Hopefully that rock isn't marked for removal back into the stockpiles before it's used.

If you have stockpiles, they won't use anything that's not already in a stockpile. I just don't use stone stockpiles, so if I need a particular type of stone I just toss up a workshop in an area where it occurs naturally.

Here's a workaround you might try which worked for me.  Build a Mason's Workshop near to a stockpile where you have an obsidian stone.  Un-designate enough of the stockpile so that the obsidian stone is the closest stockpiled stone to the shop.  Assign the dark stone building task at the shop.  Watch carefully, and when a dwarf showes up carrying onyx or jet, wait until he passes the obsidian on the stockpile, and then un-queue the job.  After the dwarf drops his current stone, immediately re-queue the job, and if that dwarf takes it again, he'll pick up the obsidian.
