Send them dropping down a deep chasm with the help of water. Makes it seem that much more awesome to know that my legendary axemen died not by mortal hands, but by nature itself.  ;D

So in other words, you flush them?

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Cistern of magma. All of my dead are dropped into it. Meanwhile, a large room is carved out for slabs made of lava proof material. I've never gotten enough dead to complete the project, but the end goal is to pour the magma full of dead dorfs into the room full of slabs and then drop some water into it creating a giant obsidian floor full of dead things. After that's done, it's my new dining hall.

Anyone know if a slab entombed in obsidian still works? I'd rather not have ghosts everywhere.

That depends on the sort of death.

Urist McRandom wanting to make a legendary craft? He gets a wooden box on the surface to immortalize his irritating folly.

Useful dwarf, like mason, miner, or carpenter? He gets a stone box in the Hall of the Dead in the fortress.

VERY useful dwarf, like legendary metalsmith, armorsmith, or weaponsmith? He gets a nickel sarcophagus in the Hall of the Dead.

Warrior? He gets a steel sarcophagus in the Tomb of Warriors.

Warrior that actually managed to kill something? He gets a gold sarcophagus and a special room in the Tomb of Warriors, floored in solid gold.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Wall of slabs with coffins behind them. I know I don't need both coffins and slabs for one dwarf, but I do it anyway because I like to think of the slabs as headstones. They certainly look like them.

Something like this, but... when mining, I designate a room, usually long, that has natural stone left in it - one 1x1 pillar per each 2 squares of height an 3 squares of width.

Then, the room is smoothed, and coffins are placed next to each pillar, set to accept dead from the start. I might sometimes leave some spots free to supply walking space...

After a coffin... fills up, a memorial slab to whoever is in it is placed next to the coffin. So, in the end, it looks like this...
Code: [Select]
OOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOnSOnSOnSOnSO
O............O
OOnSOnSO..OnSO
O............O
OOnSOnSO..OnSO
O............O
OOnSOnSO..OnSO
O............O

Or extended vertically. O is natural stone wall left over when mining, n is coffin, S is slab.... you know, placing just the right slabs in the right places is a pain.
I might actually use five of those OnS segments in one room's with, not four...
For extra respect, the first slab present makes the hall of the dead a memorial hall - so dwarves actually come to pay their respects crack jokes on how that all is tastefully arranged.

Actually, digging into the ocean (wtf?) while it's frozen, and burying them at the bottom of the sea sounds very awesome, and also space-friendly!  It's not like you're using the bottom of the ocean!

I actually did that once. Coffins must be underground in 31.18, apparently, so I dug a rampway down into the ocean and placed two coffins on the seafloor, in a room of ice.

When it unfroze, the coffins stayed, the water splashed, and got salt on my walls, as my fortress' rooms were just a wall away from the ocean. Even the cistern tapped into the ocean.

Then a siege came and I still am just dabbling in military...

My current fort has had a RIDICULOUSLY high death-rate from the get-go.
At first the dead dwarves just laid piled around the main hall, but once I starting pulling the fort back together (Thankyou, silver warhammer-armed sherrif), I dug out a whole bunch of 2-space wide corridoors off the basement, adding more as more dwarves died, and just packing them with coffins. :P The coffin-making industry is like, my chief employer!

Dwarves I like get slabs and statues etc in the main underground hallways, alongside whatever artifacts I cram in there. :) Is there any way to place an individual item on display?

C= Memorial Slab
n= Coffin
r= Ramp

Walls are usually engraved, the floor above however, is only smoothed, so it looks good with the two constructed floors I have to use. I usually make large collection of these and the ramp title stays open until I notice they've been filled. Before memorial slabs were around, I'd use statues. Although it may be designed like a graveyard, the slabs very rarely match the bodies, as I don't have the effort to make them match. Nobles are really freaking annoying with the requirements, usually I hallow out some more of the graveyard and make like a centerpiece grave.

Every apartment I make has a coffin in it, marked for burial use.

It's funny when you're checking out the bedrooms after a major battle to see who has new "roommates"

Oh by the way, my fort has the most incredibly fitting randomly-generated name...
Slaughterrocks. :D
And we've had about 30 Beast attacks, two sieges, tonnes of thieves and a few ambushes.
Good ol' Koshid, still hanging in there somehow!

Isn't that pretty average for dwarf fortress?

Not with ME at the helm.
I thought the place would have died a decade ago.
