I put all my coffins in the hallways unless I paticualily liked one, then he gets a nice tomb.  Otherwise i think having to walk past your dead parents everyday serves as a reminder to do better.

coffins? oh yeah, those hollow bricks that we shove the dead into when they... die.

I usually make a nice catacombs early on, then the FPS gets so bad... but someday I'd like to builda nice tomb system in/on the magma sea with pools of magma between 3x3 platforms.

I bury my warriors at the bottom of a death pit so that even in death they may soak in the blood of our enemies.

Worked out vein of something, smoothed and engraved, for ordinary folk. Nobles and anyone I'm attached to get a small vein to themselves, similarly decorated and with a couple of statues and a few coffers for their worldly belongings. A noteworthy death may get a memorial slab near the place it happened; an outpost liaison who somehow fell down a partially excavated well-shaft in the courtyard got one next to the trade depot.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

I bury them.
I dig a downward stairway, then I dig a tile to the left. I then build a coffin there. Then I make a slab for them, and place it on the z level above, on the tile of the coffin. Then I put a hatch cover over the stair, and forget about them.
Yeah, my dwarves don't die much.

I chuck them in a mass grave, or better yet in my current fortress, drop the pile of dead (and some not so dead) into a pool of magma. I kep the ghosts down by making a memorial wall like the ones you find commemorating dead soldiers in real life.

Warriors get a 5X5 room with a coffin, memorial slab, 4 statues and if they have a pet, their pet in a cage.

Due to all the embarking in evil areas I've been doing, I've had to bury them away in the hallways for lack of time to dig proper tombs. Skeleton camels are very unforgiving.

I've been thinking about doing sky burials, like the Tibetan ones. I want to see what happens when a dwarf body falls X-many Z-levels. Or a coffin with a dwarf in it. Either by tower or off of a tall cliff.

4 tile room with a memorial slab and a coffin. 9 tile room, memorial slab, coffin, statue for soldiers. Possibly a door for civs and soldiers if there is an abundance of em.

(Never actually used the versions with memorial slabs. Took a long DF break. Planning on it on my next fort.)

I'm hoping on viking burials myself.  Send the body to the afterlife by burning it, preferably with booze.  But I'm curious if coffins suffer the "hanging without support" like other furniture does?  If so, you could actually put your dead in the sky!

What about putting the coffin in the middle of the ocean when it freezes over, and then letting it fall down to the depths when it melts?

Stupid miner! Refuse pile. Stupid random sock-gatherer! Refuse stockpile! Grand-master hammerer that dies in combat? Platinum coffin in super-awesome tomb.

Actually, digging into the ocean (wtf?) while it's frozen, and burying them at the bottom of the sea sounds very awesome, and also space-friendly!  It's not like you're using the bottom of the ocean!

It also sounds like fun!

"oops! we didnt manage to get the coffins down there in time, but the dwarves doing the digging got a nice burial at least."
