How do you honor your dead?
« on: February 26, 2011, 04:34:26 pm »

Really just a thought, how do you build your tombs etc. for dead Dwarves?

For warriors I build a smallish tomb, with the coffin in the center.  His/her weapon and shield are placed next to it then forbidden so no one takes them.  I place a note near it as a 'plaque' explaining when he was born, when he died and how he died.

A wood box on the surface.  Nobles get a stone box on the surface because they're irritating.  Sometimes just mass memorial slabs littered around the fort.

I've got a little Catacomb region just beneath residency for normal dwarves who meet unfortunate ends one way or another.  Beneath that I have a region of tiny tombs for dwarves who achieve legendary status, sometimes tailored to their duties.  I've got a communal miner tomb carved from a Tetrahedrite vein.  My legendary Wood Cutter (and soon to be Carpenter) has a tomb with Wood walls and floors and the only wood casket I've made.

When they do something notable, like slay an FB or something, I get them a proper tomb.  I deck it out with statues of them, if I have the patience to find them, and of the FB, if there are any more.  I've got plans for magma laced memorials, but I don't have the FPS to even want to reach the magma sea in most situations.  I've been considering buying Blood from caravans for tombs too, but I don't know how good that would look.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

Each of the first 20-ish dwarfs get their own 3x3 tombs (each with 3 alcoves for two statues and a cabinet for their clothes).  The original seven get a bit more.  The expidition leader gets at least a 5x5 with 6 alcoves.

Everyone else, except nobles and warriors, gets a 1x2 pre-arranged tomb with a cabinet and that's it.  Warriors follow the 3x3+ format of the first 20.  Nobles get whatever it takes to keep them happy.  But I don't play with nobles much these days, so in practice they get nothing.  Outsiders usually just get random coffins.

Tombs only for nobles who demand them. For everyone else including pets I have lots of coffins one space apart in a big room set to be used for burial. You don't need to make them one space apart, a room or even corridor of coffins next to each other will do fine.

I usually have a statue garden with coffins around the edges with smoothed/engraved walls.  For dwarves I care about (custom named ones, particularly heroic ones, etc) I will put together a full on tomb with statues/engravings and if possible dead enemies bones or even enemies themselves in cages if I catch any (I don't generally use cage traps, but I may start up again).

Nobles only get tombs if they require them or if they meet the standards of the above (named/heroic).

My fort has three big living levels, with about 60 - 70 bedrooms on each floor. The bottom floor has a huge tomb, where rock coffins line the walls and pillars.

I'd prefer to not actually make resting places for most of them, but since I now HAVE to, or else get haunted and everything go to circus, I do. I miss being able to practice eugenics and kill unwanted migrants though.

If I liked the dwarf, they get a 3x3 room of smoothed/constructed stone, with their coffin/slab in the center, and a 'N'ote with their cause of death.

If I didn't give a crap, they get a coffin or slab in the communal graveyard. It's not a bad resting place, mind you.

If I hated the dwarf, they get a slab stuck on the surface in a dumb place nobody will ever go.

And yeah, anyone who demands a tomb gets what they want, if only to shut them up. I haven't had to actually do that yet, but when I do, it'll be made of all magma-unsafe materials, ready to be flooded if they somehow annoy me past their death.

Well, in Deepdungeons I have a memorial hall devoted to a group of warriors that fell slaying a Forgotten Beast. I'm planning on having chambers beyond that contain treasure and traps to guard the treasure. The memorial hall is it's self part of a larger complex of catacombs and crypts.

So far the only particularly elaborate burial setup I've done was a set of undulating towers placed almost entirely under the surface of an underground lake, although I've in my current fort I've turned a late game spoiler place into tombs.

Wall of slabs with coffins behind them. I know I don't need both coffins and slabs for one dwarf, but I do it anyway because I like to think of the slabs as headstones. They certainly look like them.

Typically just a couple of hastily made coffins.  I always intend to make a large catacomb for them out of... somewhere.  But figuring that part out rarely comes before the death cycles start.  When I'm lucky enough to figure it out, usually 2x3 or 3x3 individual tombs for the interesting dwarves and little 3x4-ish rooms with a handful of coffins for a sorta dorm-style entombment area for the haulers/choppers.

Dead pits! Find an extra area, stuff it with stone coffins.
