All minerals are considered metals for the purpose of the embark screen right now. Even the useless stuff like microcline.
I doubt that.  My embark/dfreveal/abandon experiments didn't show anything to support that theory, and there's no reason to not use the [METAL_ORE:<metal>:<probability>] tag for the purposes of showing stuff in the embark screen.

Cinnabar and cobaltite, despite having no use at all but a unique color (only with cobaltite, too), count as metals. I've had so many cases where my only deep metal was mercury. Useless.

I'm really surprised nobody has said this.

This thread is now diamonds.

Edit:

Cinnabar and cobaltite, despite having no use at all but a unique color (only with cobaltite, too), count as metals. I've had so many cases where my only deep metal was mercury. Useless.

While I know the time is off, I kind of wish we could make mercury fulminate out of cinnibar.

Yes. If you want to be even more accurate you could use « (Alt+174) and » (Alt+175).

I've done a lot of embarking in .19 both vanilla and with various tweaks to try and make a mod that fixes the metal scarcity issue and I can say that beyond a shadow of a doubt that fluff stones do count as metals. If you embark on a map with no metals listed, you get no fluff stones. If you embark on a map with only a couple metals, there is an appreciable chance that they will be all fluff stones. I've seen it too many times to count. The tl;dr is, metals compete with fluff stones for space on the map, no doubt about it.

And my repeated failures at getting a nice embark with precious metals, iron, flux, and fuel confirms the above. Countless times have I embarked in a location only to get massive amounts of cobaltite as my metal.

On another note, I finally found an awesome embark on a volcano with iron and flux, but the lack of anything else precious saddens me.

As a quick and dirty fix, you could take the non-ores out of the metal file, and place them in the layer file, or somewhere else.  This would, hopefully, put non-ores as regular stone and only count the contents of the minerals file as shallow/deep metal/s

Yeah, but then there'd be whole layers of microcline.
