Diamonds?
« on: February 26, 2011, 04:22:03 pm »

I've seen kimberlite numerous times. But never have I once seen diamonds at all in .19. I'm just wondering, has anyone else found diamonds yet?

I don't think this is much reason to think that they don't exist; I think that they became rarer by the same thing that made metals so rare.  They weren't all that common before, either.  I haven't found any, though my pair of fortresses in which I found Kimberlite crumbled due to me overestimating my military before I could get around to looking.

It's just an exaggeration :)
However I don't find it hard at all to believe that there are no diamonds in some worlds, given the rarity of kimberlite and all.

Umm... No.

Diamond occurs in small clusters within veins of kimberlite and is usually faint or light yellow. Colored diamonds occur as single gems within these clusters.

Kimberlite also only occurs in gabbro...

Honestly my 7+ z-levels of Emerald that I found by freak accident is worth a lot more. So unless diamonds are made much more common they're just not worth the rarity.

You say that now, but when someone makes a temple to Armok made entirely of red diamond, with a pool of elf blood in the center, and an island in the middle of the pool with a Clown chained there...

Running dfprospector on a .18 fort showed that I have 16 green diamonds (0 of all other colors), 52 LY diamonds, and 97 FY diamonds, so I doubt you'll find many at all with .19's scarcity.

Also, colored diamonds only occur in faint yellow diamond - light yellow has none.

The thing is that since you can only have two "metals" at the same depth per biome, I doubt colored diamonds are even possible, even if FY diamonds are.

I'm still not sure that I buy Gems as Metals in the embark screen.  I think I embarked on a "Shallow Metal" biome, though I may be misremembering what was plural, and I've got Tetrahedrite and...  er, some kind of gem.

All minerals are considered metals for the purpose of the embark screen right now. Even the useless stuff like microcline.

True. That's why I modded the values of said minerals so that at least they'll give me higher value crafts.

The exception is gems. Gems do not count and are actually quite common.

Update: Alright, I finally managed to get a map with bauxite. I look inside the bauxite to find sapphire. To my further enjoyment, I see star sapphires in said sapphire clusters.

So diamonds are very, very rare but it should be totally possible to have diamonds on a map. Definitely worth sacrificing a metal, unless it's iron.
