Walls made of bones
« on: February 26, 2011, 11:15:43 am »

I'm fairly new to dwarf fortress (2 months playing) and I've been looking for a way to decorate walls with bones or to make walls out of bones entirely but couldn't find any directions on the wiki. How would I go about doing this?

You can't make anything like this without modding, and even then it's not really what you're looking for. You can't make anything directly out of bones or out of specific bones as per those lying around your fort, but you could make it "appear" to be made out of bone. What you'd have to do is make a stone named bone that doesn't appear anywhere naturally and then make a reaction using bone as a reagent to output your "bone" stone, either in boulder or block form. It would read as a "bone wall" but it wouldn't actually be made out of bone. I guess it's up to you whether having the appearance is enough or if you want it to actually be made out of a specific bone I.e. a Hoary Marmot bone wall. Either way it requires some heavy modding to work.

A reaction to make bone blocks or bars, you mean?

Buildings cannot be decorated, nor can raw materials(except for dyeing thread). Only crafts, weapons, clothes and the like can have decorations put on it as far as I know.

You can decorate furniture with bone, so you could have statues studded with elf bone out front or surrounding your trade depot.

Unfortunately totems can't be uilt either, they can only be placed on stockpiles. But if you don't mind placing some totem stockpiles around then that's a way of decorating with skulls.

I really hope that totems will serve some sort of function in the future such as demoralizing invaders or, at the very least, inspiring thoughts

It shouldn't be terribly hard to make a custom workshop which takes a spear and a totem and serves no purpose but to be a totem on a pole.

you can made custom workshop or just any logical existing workshop
with custom material for bone block or bar.
then make a reaction turn a certain amount of bones, like 20 into one 'bone block'.(though i dont know if that's possible. maybe the dwarves would just take a whole chunk, regardless amount, to make one block...)
thusly you can build a fortress out of bones.
but them there would not be names like 'goblin bone block' or 'dragon bone wall'
unless of course, you are up to do each creature's bones. to correct reactions.
