Big Fort FPS
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:33:15 am »

I was quite proud that I've got 120 dorfs and the framerate still goes between 80 and 90, however it's been going down to 60 recently. And I was thinking...

The more things happening on the map obviously kills FPS.

What effect would, say, several hundred zombies and skeletons have on it?

In other words, will epic FPS return if I pour magma into the demonic fortress. XD

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

No, puring magma/liquid into anything will only reduce it :P

Put spoilers either in the title or in yor post. And it may, but I have only found one fortress, and that was in the Collonization : 3000 mod.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Er, spoilers... erm. Nope.

I said Demonic Fortress. That's not a spoiler. That's like saying HFS. It's not a spoiler. I didn't say what, or where, or anything about it.

@Dutchling at first, yes no doubt. But afterwards...

Nobody cares, everyone knows about HFS.

Precisely. And if they don't, they're going to get a nasty surprise.

EDIT: Also, pouring magma is WILL help. I know it will.

There's over 300 of them. o_O Tell me that's not going to be lagging the game.

Then another 300 clowns.

The "nobody cares" phrase will start a fight. May I kindly suggest not saying that?
But yes, the zombies in your Demonic Fortress will reduce FPS. They are spewing miasma to no end, and that is the main reason I never play in evil biomes. The sheer volume of underground zombies destroys my FPS. Kill the zombies, maybe with magma to remove the corpses and therefore miasma. Don't overdo it, though, if you want the *shiny* at the bottom.

Magma will only hurt your FPS more. Use the military, but be careful; a lot of them will get very angry, because undead+miasma = a lot of bad thoughts.

Will they attempt to attack my fort should they find a way in? If so, I'll just set up some steel discs and watch the limbs fly.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

I'm envious of your FPS. I get 30 - 50 FPS with a population cap of 50 dwarves on a 2x2 embark. I know it's my miserable rig but maaaaaaaaaaaaan.

FPS really craps out with magma play due to the constant tracking of the temperature over a broad area such as the circus.

I've currently got over 200 dwarves on a 4x4 map, and between 10-20 FPS. I've done very little to manage FPS, I'm quite pleased with this figure. In fact the FPS was about the same with half the population and it hasn't decreased even though I've had a massive flood and there should be lots of flow calculations. It's wierd. I really can't understand FPS or how to increase it during play, it's just barmy. Nothing seems to consistently make any difference.

You may not know exactly how the game process information and how this is directly linked to your lag.  Pouring ANY liquid will cause a tremendous amount of calculations proportional to the volume being dumped.  300 Demons pathing will be much less than an entire underground lake multiple layers deep being simultaneously moved.  Both must be calculated, but one will require significantly more processing, that being the lake or whatever large body of water or magma you would pour.

Idea: Save game, get out of the game, remove temperature, pour magma in demonic fortress, let it spill so it doesn't moves, save game, put temperature back, load game, let undead roast in suddenly hot magma, save game, remove temperature.

And why does every first answer to a thread has such a high probability to contain the M-word ?
