Barrel spam
« on: August 26, 2006, 07:14:00 pm »

My fortress is just getted started, and my dwarves are giving me constant spam about "Store Item in Barrel: Job item lost or destroyed." They've done this in previous fortresses, but this is constant. I have a save; if you want it, tell me where to send it and if it should be compressed.

By constant it continues to flood hundreds of times that fills up gamelog.txt?  Or does it go away when you press [a] to clear the announcements?

You can send it to toadyone@bay12games.com.  The region#.sav + region# folder in a zip/rar.

It goes away when I go to announcements, but it happens fairly often.

This seems to happen to my forts as well. Occasionally dwarves just get the idea to store something in some barrel and I get this message. Usually it's several different dwarves at about the same time.

Probably food related since it's been happening while I've only had food barrels... I've rarely had enough barrels to do any brewing.

I'd like to blame plump helmet harvesting or plump helmet seeds but that's just a hunch.

To my understanding, you well receive that lost or destroyed message when a dwarf is going to put an item into a container but in getting there, someone else has taken that container, so it's no longer available.

It seems to be how it works, and I've read it at least one other place as well.

Yeah, the barrel is "lost" because somebody else moved it.  It happens a lot with bins/barrels.  The message is strongly worded though, and probably shouldn't even display without all notifications on.

Possibly if there are several barrels in the stockpile that are "nearly" the same distance, the dwarves could randomize a bit which one to pick?  Sort of like ethernet collision avoidance  :D

This kind of failure happens after they've picked a barrel, so they'd just have to pick another barrel, which is what they do...  right after they post the annoying message.
