Dwarf fortress on-the-go
« on: February 26, 2011, 03:37:55 am »

today i finally wrapped up a project of mine and reached a lifetime goal- dwarf fortress in my pocket. i'm running a regular android 2.2 phone (with a physical keyboard of course!). what's that? it's arm based? and far too week? that doesn't matter considering the widespread availability of 3G and the simplicity of an ssh connection! i signed up for amazon cloud E2- a computer in the cloud with a public IP.  i simply setup an ubuntu micro instance under the limitations of the free tiered plan (only available for first year after signup) and installed dwarf fortress on it in text mode. using connectbot, i can ssh into the instance from anywhere i get wifi or 3G reception and i can play dwarf fortress! it is a little bit low, the instance has hardly 600mb of ram and a simple CPU- however now i have an always-on completely free virtual PC for dwarf fortress. the ssh connection is a little funky at times on a few screens (such as embark location), but so far it's worked pretty well overall. the keyboard is a little bit tricky but works so well for the most part, some tricky keys like tab are an issue but thanks to the ability to remap keys, it's not an issue.

so far it's been fun and i recommend others to try it!

Very awesome.
Now, your next task is, to go door-to-door with it, and convert people to Dwarfortism.

Armok wants to be your savior, if only because he needs someone to watch commit supremely stupid acts

So Armok is the "Armok's Witnesses"... witness?

Armok loves you and has a wonderful plan for your death.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Armok loves you and has a wonderful plan for your death,
but he's open to even more overengineered catastrophic deaths as well.

What size embark? What sort of FPS are you getting?

Ask questions, get answers, more questions come next year?
