See how long I go before I get overwhelmed by aliens / shut down for being an asshole who never bothers to go to Cydonia.

I've started making Throwaway Avengers so I can prevent Alien Infiltrations after they stole the UK from right under my base because I had no way to shoot down a battleship reliably.

It sucks that you can't prevent infiltration once the mission began..

You can, in theory, by beating the crap out of every craft they send before any of them land.

Edit: Nope, just checked it, that source was wrong. UFOpaedia says otherwise.

LAME.

Yeah, the ONLY mission that you can meaningfully stop via interception is a terror one.

Base and infiltration missions?  Successful when the last ships show up.  Retaliation missions?  They keep throwing ships until one of them successfully LANDS (even getting shot down by your defenses doesn't help).

Shit, the countries keep backing out of X-COM's funding, tips for stopping X-COM from going under?

Also, Terror Missions are a real bitch. Sectopods with Cyberdiscs keep wiping the walls with my soldiers, goddamn reaction times.

Mass produce scanners or something better, and sell them. Remember, you don't have to kick every UFO's ass. Pick your fights.

Do production?
Make laser cannon and sell them.
They are the most profitable.

Production works fine for turning a profit.

Preventing the game from ending because (almost?) all the countries turned against you... not so much.  ;)

(That said, you only have to protect a few countries to prevent a game over, IIRC, so as long as you're absolutely certain that you can protect a couple of countries, and you've got production keeping you financially afloat, you're safe.)

IIRC terrorships are too fast for interceptors.
Supplyships are easy, the smaller ships are also doable, but have to be lucky to intercept.
harvesters dunno, but landed they are awful.

battleships require several ships armed with rugbys, and still probably some get downed. A landed BS ois good resource though.

About actually losing the game due to pacts:

You won't actually lose the game from a pact being signed, unless it happens to all countries. A pact being signed only makes you lose said country's support and gives you one more base to destroy.

That was kinda the point of the above post I think, if Russia really does that then you're safe as long as you actually fight the aliens over their heads, thus keeping them happy enough not to withdraw funding.

Anyway, to take the thread on a tangent, I'd like to describe a variant of the X-Com premise that I've been formulating in my head, with intent to take a stab at producing something of the kind in ever-glorious ASCII.
Spoiler: Possibly long text (click to show/hide)
Well, that was long. And a tiny bit incoherent.

Anyway, I've been thinking over this premise, trying to find any obvious faults. Would you play a game like this? Why?

I've been planning another game like this in my head, which would take the fundamental technology, unit, and diplomatic management of the X-Com series but make the setting medieval, placing the player in command of an independent mercenary force in the middle of a war between several rival empires and their unknown, barbarian invaders.

Since I got hooked on X-Com, I've found that I'd be willing to play any game that offers similar gameplay; therefore, Sean, I would have loved to try your idea if the game was free to play.

I like the sound of Sean's idea too. A few quick questions; how will Aliens respond to the strafing runs from aircraft, and what will they have to threaten those aircraft from the ground? What incentives would the player have to use footsoldiers rather than just having a few scouts and overwhelming airpower?

I really love the idea, it has great potential; seems like what they were almost getting at with Apoc, but larger scale and even more awesome.
