I'm currently playing on the middle (veteran, I think?). My last game on the second difficulty was going downward as, while I could finish the game, I would likely get the Psi ripped out of me due to very little defense against it in that current game. And waiting for when I have the defense is not very likely since the aliens were all over earth. I decided to just backup the saves and start a new game.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Restarted a new game because I was on a different computer, I always TRIED TO NOT USE THE LOADING TRICK, but I couldn't resist it. I found out about the loading trick when I was a small boy playing a DOS game watch "Deathwatch" (I forgot the full name) in which I save/load abused the casino... old habits die hard I guess.

Though I did let one guy die from a grenade though, with an agonizing shout.

I like UFO2sides redrawing of most tiles, especially the UFO Inner Doors, but the sectoids lost their old charm a bit in my eyes.

I still want someone to make an X-Com TC for Silent Storm. The game already has plasma weapons and powersuits (even a flying powersuit at one point), so all that's really needed is extra armor sets, some kind of scripted research, and of course the alien grunts instead of the human grunts. Of course, Geoscape won't happen unless someone manages to seriously hack that little travel screen, but otherwise I think it's doable...

On an unrelated note, I've just had my first run-in with Chryssalids since I don't remember when. Snakeman terror missions are fun. Still lost one of my sergeants to a grenade (even though he had a powersuit... I don't think the squaddies nearby would be unscratched if it was a blaster bomb), but actually managed to save about half of the civilians. Blocking corridors with the new Laser HWP helped. :)

Before Flying Suits: CHRYSALID MISSIONS ARE TERRIBLE.

After Flying Suits: Kill snakeman and feel free to hover around as long as you like, you won't get killed by those chrysalids.

Not so good for civilians though.

Hey, idea! You could stun civilians and stuff them into your troopers' packs! Or just stun them, the chrysalids won't touch them then... hopefully.

My game has a snakeman base, while I have just started to research plasma guns (second research after D armour).
Already suffered through two snake terror missions with only normal weapons... now I know the true face of horror.

Who cares about civilians. I usually just burn the village to save the village. Anything else is too much work and troop replacements are expensive.

Well, if you can, why not? I don't rush in to save civilians, but if there's a civvie threatened by a chrysalid on the far side of the wall, and my firing squad is on the other side with full TUs, I see no reason not to blast a few holes, first in the wall and then in the monster. Alternatively, stunbomb the civilian. It won't do much good against a chrysalid, but it'll hopefully prevent the creation of an additional zombie.

Btw, did you know aliens are stupid? I've had, on several occasions, Sectoid soldiers attacking my HWP's at point-blank range with stunbombs. Effort-free live alien capture.

Your soldiers can very well do that with reaction shots, inhabitants in mars and earth seem to be incompetent without the command of the mighty players.

Yeah, that's the downside of the autocannon, which is otherwise the only standard weapon I keep in my inventory after researching lasers.

That's the downside of the HE, or IN autocannon. Anything with an effect area, in general. Single-target weapons usually cause no problems with reaction fire, unless you have no sense of safe teammate positioning.

Really, anyone who hasn't tried playing the game without save scumming should do it. It makes everything far far more meaningful. The first time I tried I lost 3 or 4 Skyrangers. At one point I lost 2 in a row.

Get a hyperwave decoder as soon as you can and avoid any etheral missions until you have a full squad of small launcher equiped troops. Simply ignore their terror missions unless you can level the city.

X-Com isn't like Civilization where you start the process of losing 2 hours before you realize it is over. You can lose most of the countries in X-Com and still have money from building and selling material free equipment.

I generally try to play without savescumming, unless I lose in completely unfair ways. More than once I've been limping home with just one or two survivors. I rarely get completely taken out on missions, so I'm not sure if I want to cope with a Skyranger loss, but I don't reload if I lose Interceptors to a battleship, so I guess I could live with it.
