I think I get what you mean. You want an MMO version of Apoc?

No, an MSO version. Massively Singleplayer Offline. :P Meaning, like GalCivII. Multiplayer optional. And across the whole planet, not just one city.

So you want to play as megapol versus other cities and just the strategy map and no tactical map?

Advice for Puzzlemaker: DO NOT ruin the learning experience by consulting LPs and online stuff extensively. Look up things you get really stuck on (e.g. you get raped by a team of 5 Cyberdiscs on a Terror Mission, you get raped by a Ninja Chrysalid chain reaction, etc.) if you can't beat them after a couple tries.

Some of the technical things (e.g. a clip is counted as spent IF and ONLY IF it's in a gun at the end of a mission; any clip that's in a gun and has been fired even once is counted as spent; any clip NOT in a gun can be recovered, so unload all your partly-spent clips if you're sure the mission is over) are okay to look up because they're not part of the Fun of Learning.

I really miss learning about X-com from the beginning and things like being so terrified the first time I had to fight [THOSE ORANGE FUCKERS] that I refused to do missions against them for like half an in-game year. :3

Who were the "Orange Fuckers"? I can't think of who you mean, unless you mean the Ether's, in which case, you should be just about ready to finish up the game by the time you see them.

I met those insect things that were all like HEY I AM GOING TO TURN THIS CIVILIAN INTO A ZOMBIE!

And I was like, huh.  It's a zombie now.  Let me shoot it.

And then I was like what the fuck.

Also, on a mission right now to capture one of those psionic little fucks.  I captured like 10 of them, but it turns out only the leaders are psionic.  Arg.

And hey bankrupt and the US dropped me.  Wonderful.  Fuck you too aliens.

And GIANT SHIP WHAT THE HELL DO I DO!  It's like trying to kill a fighter with a fly!  I guess I avoid the gigantic ships of death and hope that they don't cause too much trouble.  Or wait for them to land and then attack them.

Also:  Alien Bases.  WHAAAAA.  I tried ten times now, having to re-load a save each time.  It's full of those psionic little douchebags.  OH HEY YES TRY TO MIND CONTROL MY GUY TEN TIMES, I AM SURE THAT ONE OF THEM WILL WORK.  Grrr.  Can I just blow up the control station and then run for it?

1. To prevent alien infiltration of countries, station bases with long and short range radars directly near them.
2. Later alien technology allows for the creation of [REDACTED] which is powerful enough for even a normal fighter to take down battleships.
3. Try to find the guy in your group with the weakest psi resistance. Once you do, give him a useless weapon like a stun-rod and put him in the back of your transport.

1. If you have a long radar, I'm 90% sure the short one is useless. And both are useless once you get [MAGIC].
2. Battleships are beasts, and the only weapon that can outrange one AND do reasonable damage to it has ammo that must be MADE, not FOUND, and requires Elerium to make. I prefer to ignore them.
3. You can tell who the weakest link (psionically) is by seeing which member of your squad gets targeted nonstop. Because if the aliens can see ANY of your troops, they will ALWAYS target that specific troop. They're cheating by always targeting him instead of people they see, so responding by giving him a stun rod and smoke grenades is fair game.

Actually, it does have a use.

You cannot gain increased detection by building more Large Radar facilities at the same base, but you can add a single Small Radar System to boost your total detection rate from the base to 30% at short range and 20% at long range. Any more radars of either type have no game effect, except on the detection meters on the Base Information page.

I'll look into x-com util.

Is there any way to see the stats of your peeps in the loadout screen?  I can't seem to figure it out, but maybe I am missing something obvious.

No one else has answered this, so I'll kick in: the only way I know is to, ahead of time, rename your soldiers.  I used to name them like: "Dieter W. /HW" (Heavy Weapons), "Susan M. /Sct" (Scout), or "Adam K. /Psi" (Dude that hides inside the plane).

XcomUtil helps out by auto-assigning equipment based on the stuff after the slash.  It can also automatically put a few flags into their names, like a M for high marksmanship or C for coward (i.e. low bravery).  It speeds up the game so much, I can't even tell you.

My strategy for exiting the Skyranger:
  • XcomUtil sorts the soldiers so that the ones with the best reactions will be first off.
  • Cycle through all the soldiers to fill in what they can see on the map.  XcomUtil helps by making the soldiers face the craft's windows instead of looking toward the ramp.
  • First two guys kneel.  That's all they do.  Even doing this may draw fire.
  • If hostiles are visible out the ramp, the first four guys open up on them.  The second two guys need to save enough movement units to kneel in case they don't manage to kill the hostiles, meaning that the third two guys need to shoot.
  • Otherwise, the second two guys arm (no delay) and throw smoke grenades just past and to the left/right of the ramp.  That's all they do.  Depending on their weapon, they might or might not have enough moves left for a single reaction-fire shot.
  • Other soldiers may arm grenades with multi-turn fuses.  (Don't forget they're armed.)  Also, the quarterback readies his Football of Doom.
  • End the turn, and hope that if hostiles spot the soldiers, reaction-fire will drop them before they can shoot.
  • Second turn: the first two guys stand.  Then they each walk one space forward.  Then they turn left/right and drop to the ground beside the ramp.  Then they double back diagonally under the plane's undercarriage.  They do not fire on any hostiles they see.
  • Everyone else moves out or shuffles forward, being sure not to bunch up.
I do this because the first turn is potentially the deadliest.  Your guys are all clustered together, and the hostiles have an entire turn's worth of reaction fire moves.  If they see you, they will kill you.

Heh. Well, almost. I liked Syndicate, btw, but the realtime combat wasn't quite easy to handle. Especially on the Genesis. >_>
I thought more of something like regular X-Com, but with expanded base-building and actual multiplayer. It kinda works this way in Apocalypse, but the other organizations don't interact with you much. Also, you're limited to one city.

Sounds interesting. Maybe have a look at what the developers said about X-Com Genesis (One of the cancelled ones), see if there's anything in there you like the sound of?

Well, one thing I dislike about XSGCom is that it's aready been done (as a webnovel). The other thing is that said webnovel highlights exactly why the Stargate universe is better off not meeting X-Com personnel. Or the non-human part of the universe, at least. HWP-mounted gatling plasma staff cannon, anyone?

I'd much rather play either against human factions on a human-only planet, or against aliens on a multi-race planet. Or, say, a number of alien races arrive on earth and have to play "X-Com", fighting against each other, keeping up The Masquerade, etc.
