Ooh, nice!  Thought 81 was the max TUs though I could be wrong.

loads of heavy plasma clips made

Consider.  Pretty much every single alien there has heavy plasma.  You, on the other hand, have a TON of soldiers...and only 80 inventory spaces.  Specifically you have 26 spaces.  So, that's 52 inventory slots used for nothing but weapon + 1 shot, and you probably want more slots for extra blaster bombs, medi-kits (maybe not as important here), mind readers, maybe psi-amps, maybe grenades or flares--remember it's dark there!

Taking extra clips might not be necessary.

Taking 26 people is silly when you can bring HWPs in my opinion. Also, assuming you don't waste slots on giving Heavy Plasmas to your Psi users and you bring 4 of those, that's up to 16 peopleslots you can effectively use to mitigate your ammo needs.

My play style doesn't really rely on HWPs. Except for base defense.

For early game, I use them for scouting, and early terror missions, to scout and kill aliens.

I like to use them as disposable scouts throughout the game. They're big, durable, relatively cheap, and they attract fire like nothing else.

Also, they can act as a 2 tile wall when you kneel if you need mobile cover. Really useful for those guys that you don't want to loose but don't want sitting on their asses the rest of the game.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Never used them much, I tend to get them killed with the first shot that hits them. Missile platform copuld be usefull in defensive missions though. :)

I don't know, I think the rocket ones are great for terror missions, Sectoid and Snakeman alike. Against Sectoids they are good because they usually have good armor and don't fall to mind control, and against Snakemen they're good because they carry more rockets than a soldier and can't be zombified.

Hi all - I stumbled across this thread and then looked up the game; it intrigued me so I bought the complete pack off D2D last night. I played for about 30 minutes last night to see if it worked, and it seems to run fine.

However, I've done some poking around the internet and it seems like there are a lot of bugs and stuff, and various patches/ways of fixing them. I'm in the middle of an exam week right now, so I really can't spend the time to find out what I need to do initially to get the game going well (in terms of technical bugfixes and the like). I was hoping that perhaps somebody here would be able to give me a list of "must-have" fixes/downloads/what-have-you that I can apply to the game - I'm guessing its been asked here before but I don't have the time to spend searching at the moment, so yeah, I'm asking  you guys to do boring search work for me =). I'd really appreciate it if somebody could at least point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

I use Xcomutil and nothing else and the game works fine. There's a simple installer, everything is optional and easy to set up. :)

the remakes by Cenega are also worth a try if you like the format.

There aren't that many terrible bugs. It can be played with perfectly fine without xcomutil. For my experience, the real annoying factors, stem from its age then bugs. Such as the infamous 80 item limit.

However, XcomUtil is pretty freaken nice. Just be mindful of selecting which things to turn on. As some may consider them cheats. (Though that really up to play style.)

Not remakes. Insanely computer crashingly buggy (But hey, if you do it right, you can get that malware iTunes off.) spiritual sequels.

okay sequels, whatever. :P
Not noticed the buggy nature, my desktop had driver problems etc when I was playing these, those caused enough odd, crashy behaviour for several games. T
They are based mainly on tactical territory conquering and resource management, so if you liked Xcom for it's non-territorial strategy...these are not really what you are looking for. Still fun for the expanded experience/research systems, more weapontypes expandable weapons/soldiers.
psi is not as big, but can still be usefull in the later game (it takes a loooong time to train).
