Laser Cannons are a damn good money spinner. Definitely worth using any spare manufacturing capacity on them, although you shouldn't let them interfere with making useful stuff (Armour, Weapons) unless you really need the money.

I never really had any problems with money in UFO. If you take landed crafts instead of shooting them down, you'll earn a lot of money + elerium, so there will be no need to mass-manufacture something for profit.

It's actually sort of a double-edged sword. If you shoot them down, they don't get to do their mission... but there's a 75% chance that the ship reactor explodes and leaves you a lot less alloys to salvage and no Elerium-115.

Don't waste money on plasma rifles/pistols.  Once you've got heavy plasma it's the only gun you'll ever need, and after a few months it's the only gun the aliens will use(Besides launchers and stuff)

If you get a heavy plasma early on, I wouldn't even start on lasers.

Wow, a lot of suggestions.  Thanks guys!

Yeah, I got laser rifles.  I really like laser rifles, they don't require ammo.  Which is awesome.  Plus they are pretty accurate, and for the guys I am fighting now pretty damn effective.

I'll look into getting heavier plasma weapons.  With laser pistol backups, of course.  Hehe.

Also:  I want armor.  It's a sad state of affairs.

Edit:  I couldn't find any information on this, but does having a soldier carry a weapon in both hands reduce accuracy?

And yes, they do lower your accuracy if it is something like a rifle.

A weapon that needs two hands and doesn't have a free hand has a 20% accuracy penalty, I think. There's no penalty for Pistols, Nades or Stun Rods. There's also very little reason to dual wield anything except Pistol and Nade, Stun Rod or Psi gear in X-Com. X-Com Apoc had a real-time mode (Think Fallout Tactics, but with aliens), and dual wielding gave a good boost to firepower close up there, but in Turn Based games there's no point in inflicting the accuracy penalty.

You must, must, must seek out 'XcomUtil' by Scott T. Jones.  That will let you do your preassigned loadouts, and gives some control over who gets off the craft first.

Also, I hope Steam's version is the old MS-DOS one, not the Windows recompile.  The latter doesn't have any bugfixes and does have a couple new bugs.  Including a nasty one that doesn't let you fire a weapon straight up or down, which really screws you over when you start using the Football of Doom.

GoG version is the CE edition, the one for windows and the Steam version is the dos one.

So you want to go for the Steam one if you're on vista or 7.

Yeah, steam is the MS-DOS version.

I'll look into x-com util.

As for the duel wielding, I was mostly talking about taking out a stun rod in your other hand for close hand fighting and taking prisoners.

Is there any way to see the stats of your peeps in the loadout screen?  I can't seem to figure it out, but maybe I am missing something obvious.

You can dual wield a pistol and stun rod with no penalty. Any other gun with a stun rod will have a 20% accuracy penalty on the gun.

Heh. And I wondered why my people kept missing all the time. Somehow it never occurred to me that running around with automatic rifles akimbo isn't going to improve accuracy. :)

Btw, I sometimes wondered if there's a game like X-Com, except more like X-Com and a 4X Strategy combined. Several rival organizations working from different countries of one planet, researching new technologies, assaulting each others' bases, terrorizing cities under others' protection, terrorizing cities under their own protection and blaming it on the others, etc etc. Something like a usual space 4X game, but with cities instead of stars/planets, bases instead of colonies, and agents/vehicles instead of starships. I'd imagine the game would be fairly fun to play. It'd have to be turn-based, with each turn probably representing an hour on the geoscape. You'd design and equip your own fighters to patrol around cities, develop life support systems to construct larger bases (which have to be self-sustaining and everything-proof), and maybe solve government conspirancies with alien invasions/precursor artifacts/the odd megalomaniac providing extra fun. You'd be also able to trade technology with governments, and perhaps eventually fund some goverments and buy them over to gain more direct control over stuff, etc, etc.

Heh. Well, almost. I liked Syndicate, btw, but the realtime combat wasn't quite easy to handle. Especially on the Genesis. >_>
I thought more of something like regular X-Com, but with expanded base-building and actual multiplayer. It kinda works this way in Apocalypse, but the other organizations don't interact with you much. Also, you're limited to one city.
