Encouraging attacks
« on: February 25, 2011, 10:28:52 pm »

My highly-trained military is getting kind of bored in this non-evil biome. They'd really like to piss off some civilizations and start some fights but it isn't happening.

I did have them kill an annoying and useless human diplomat though. No response as of yet.

Anyway, I'm wondering what i can do to encourage attacks other than maybe manufacture as much wealth as possible and kill every diplomat and every member of every caravan that comes by. Not seeing many cave creatures for some reason....

To maximize elf hate you can reject their demand to limit deforestation, agree to it and break it, and/or try to sell them wood products. There has been discussion that their likelihood of attacking you has been decreased though, so good luck.

Hmm, I spoke too soon. Here come the humans to investigate their missing diplomat but they're just running around in circles at the edge of the map in the rain even though I've left the front door open for them.

Maybe the tactic is to bore my dwarves to death so they can take the fort.

I haven't tried very hard to chop down 100+ trees but I haven't seen any elf diplomats even after playing 10+ forts over a few weeks. Guess I don't come up with enough demand for wood to chop down enough trees.

Humans will actually 'siege' you instead of running blindly into cage traps.

Elf diplomats don't exist anymore. You can mod them back in, but you'll need a world regen.

They sure don't seem interested in killing the puppy or war giraffe that I tossed over the wall....

Elven tree-cap diplomacy doesn't work the way you would expect it to.  Unless it got fixed at some point when I wasn't paying attention, (I doubt it, since the diplomats don't exist anymore, anyway) the game doesn't actually keep track of how many trees you cut down, it only checks how many logs you have in your fort.  You have to stockpile a large collection of logs that you don't use in your fort to piss off the elves.  You can actually trade with the elves to get the logs to do this, because they can't tell the difference between you cutting down a tree and you buying one from them.

In order to get the elves pissed enough at you to attack you, you need to agree to the limit on how many trees you cut down, then break it by still having logs.  They will not attack if you just keep blowing off the agreement, since you're just not agreeing to limit your woodcutting.  They'll definitely attack if you blow off the treaty.  Alternately, you can just keep offering the elves wooden crap or killing them.  Do it three years in a row, and they'll probably attack you.

Humans are useful, so I don't try to kill them, but they tend to be much more touchy about losing a caravan.

What about logs built into walls?  Like, build your above-ground fort from wood?  They still show in the Z Stock menu as logs.

Kohaku -- I find that in .19, with the rarity of metals, Elves are useful for the first year.  they give you wooden armor, which can really help until you've traded for enough steel or iron.

If you want to go for style, you could seize all their goods, let a single elf merchant escape, and drown the rest.  Letting the one get away doesn't do anything, I dont' think, but it's got pizazz.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

If I recall correctly, that point did indeed get fixed... it now tracks logs cut, not logs stockpiled. Unfortunately, this makes no difference since the Elven Diplomat is now broken.

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

I'm still in 31.18, but I'm working on killing every elf that enters the fortress, and looting their stuff.  Should I wait to trade, then offer them wood, then kill them?

I'll let you know if they ever get around to attacking me.

It was easier, although annoying, when they had a diplomat to offend.

Buy all of their useful animals.  Elephants and giant jaguar and the like, then slaughter them wholesale.  Seize cargo, all of it, butcher them, and purge with magma!

How do you get your military to kill tamed creatures? They don't show up on the list of targets nor can they be selected.

Went out and handily slaughtered the humans running around in circles on the edge of the map. Then a roc appeared immediately afterward and I killed it in two seconds, causing an elite marksdwarf to name his copper crossbow.

Now, if I keep killing the humans who show up will they keep sending larger forces? They don't seem to want to attack the fort but I'm assuming they'll go after any caravans that come along....
