Ah, well usually I deploy a few steel-armored axers to guard the recovery, but I haven't done any GCS captures in .19 so yeah, new ideas my be needed.

I wish. The only metal ores that I've found so far is one short vein of Tetrahedrite. That's it. A few bars of Copper... not even enough for one suit of armor. It's only spring of year 2, so I haven't even had a chance to buy any goods that I ordered from the Dwarven caravan. It has only come by once (in the Fall of year 1), so it hasn't yet returned carrying the stuff that I ordered.

Don't forget you can buy up every useless steel thing caravans have and then melt them down. I got a few steel bars melting down steel toy hammers and other random useless steel crap. Kind of expensive especially if the steel items are high quality but at least it means you get more steel and I could make a few nice steel items with the resulting metal.

That's certainly my plan... but the caravan has only visited once, and I didn't have much to trade on that first occasion. Lately, I've been trying not to increase my fortress wealth too fast, since that tends to lead to invasions before I have my defenses ready. In this current game, I've got my perimeter wall, my lever-activated drawbridges, and my 10-z-level-deep Dodge-Em trap all completed before any opponents have shown up... so I'm better set to repel them.
