Friendly serpent man in Fortress mode?
« on: February 25, 2011, 08:06:08 pm »

There's a serpent man civ sitting in the caverns in my current fortress, but there appears to be only one survivor there. On the units list it appears as "Friendly", with it's facial fat missing.  When I ventured down there there were the bodies of several others, and a forgotten beast. Later another forgotten beast turned up and attacked it, and after a fairly lengthy battle the monster died, with no wounds at all inflicted on this odd surviving serpent man, armed only with a tower cap shield and spear (and its bite).

I've not seen something like this happen before, and thought that underground civilisations were always hostile in Fortress Mode.

Children of underground civilizations members are ''Friendly'' (I was making an elk bird man pasture, in an older fortress)

Hostile parents -> friendly childrens. A bug, I think. So, how longer is your fort?
Anyway, this serpent man is awesom. Wall him in a room, and make a megaproject!

Too right he's awesome, and if enemies keep pathing to him so much the better!

The fort is six years old, which seems rather young for that to happen (and I first found him after five years).

If you could get a female and male one you could start breeding them and make an army to conquer hell.

I thought it happened when they killed the FB. Or did that bug get fixed.

I thought I read that there was a random chance for animal peoples to be friendly...

My current fort has a friendly cave swallow man who so far has killed a couple of the forgotten beasts I've seen.  He's in an area of the first cavern and my fort opens into the second cavern.  So far I've only ever seen FBs get announced in the 2nd cavern, and after my first FB and about 18 troglodytes I walled in an area of the 2nd cavern.  Now it seems FBs scope out my walls, then head for the passage between the first and second caverns and I assume from there bee line it to the cave swallow men.

I'd like to mine out a passage that I can line with cages and then open that passage near the cave swallow men so I can allow my new friend into my fort and release the rest of his tribe so they can continue being a forgotten beast deterrent.

But hostiles in the caverns certainly turn friendly after killing a FB.

Because they lack the tags for item theives and baby snatchers, yes, they can be freindly! However, there specific ethics make this a rather rare event, as you would need to roll high on a few checks.

Also, animalmen that fight forgotten beasts become freindly, as far as I know, that may have been changed.

Now I want to have animalman diplomacy so much more.  I can go trade them some fine dwarven weapons and armor for a fish or whatever they have lying around, and make them a secondary fortress militia.

Or at least be able to drop weapons at their feet and have them pick them up?

I so need to capture a GCS so that I can get an FB and some animal men together in the arena.....

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

This sounds like either a bar joke, or the start of a sitcom.

It's definitely possible to get a friendly tribe down there, I remember having one such, there weren't any FB corpses around them, that's for sure. Besides it would require a dozen of FB's to turn them all friendly. There's not much to do about them, though, so it's only interesting because it's rare.
