I haven't played DF for a week, but when now when I start up DF, my laptop screen goes black for 5-10 seconds (with a faint shadow of the screen image pulsing on/off) before returning to "normal".
Except normal means that the process repeats everytime I attempt to make DF the active window or "Start Playing".
Once the screen returns I can use any other program windows, but if I make DF the active window, the screen goes black again for 5-10 seconds. I have to terminate DF from the Task Manager. And of course, I can't think of anything that has changed on my PC since I last successfully ran DF, unless my company has downloaded updates system remotely. Up until now, I've been playing for months without issue.

What I've tried:
1) I have deleted the DF application and folders, downloaded and upzipped the latest version. (I was already running the latest version.)
2) I have tried running in both fullscreen and windowed mode (with default settings and my original init settings of 600x800).

Here's what I think it might be:
My IBM Thinkpad T42 video driver has a setting that allows me to test out new display settings and if the setting it glitchy, the display will automagically revert to the previous configuration. I think it's having problems with some display configuration with DF.
But I don't know why and I certainly don't know how to comfirm my diagnosis nor fix it.

Can anyone help me? Or at least help me help my company's tech support troubleshoot it?

Aha! Perhaps I've fixed it...

I just remembered that I had downloaded an installed a free (crap) MMO called Tales of Pirates.

Upon uninstalling and rebooting, DF seems to be behaving much better.

Installing other games? DF was just too jealous to allow you to play the harlot with another video game. It all makes sense, to me.
