Tantrum spiral prevention/solutions
« on: February 25, 2011, 02:24:57 pm »

We all know what a tantrum spiral is: the death of hours of your time....

What do we do?

Prevention: Two separate forts?
Benefits: separated from the rest of the fort's impending death.
Costs: You loose out on labor specialization and have more complexity.

Solutions: Extremely high value rooms/tombs, etc.
Benefits: might, might offset some of the happiness loss
Costs: Self evidently expensive.

Stop all active jobs, let your dwarves idle.  They get ecstatic in a hurry.

That really works?

All I've seen happen is the usual insanity from when "my friend/family died, happens. It spreads through relationships....

Waterfalls and/or mist generators will keep your dwarves happy. I'm not sure if it carried over into the new versions but before it was practically an exploit given how effective it was.

Maybe, but given the risk of flooding ,I'd say it balance out (no really, lots of forts die to flooding).

Meh, my recent for is filled with masterwork furniture and tons of food. So as a test I poured magma inside (reloaded after). About 30 dorfs out of the 120 or so caught fire and died. The rest were unhappy for a while. There was only one tantrum. Then they were all 'Oh yay nice food'

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

If you're afraid your fort will die to floods than put some hatches in the floors that trigger if the water gets too high.  Pressure plates work wonders here.

The reason I don't use Waterfalls is FPS.  The game slows to a crawl so easily, I'm not yet ready to force it to that point.

Get some statues made, and put them beside doorways.  Like if the entrance to your fort is 1 door, then place 4 statues on the inside and outside.  Dwarves get happy thoughts looking at statues and stuff, and four masterwork platinum statues is a lot of happiness.

Did something change in the recent version?

Giant dining halls with statues and engravings aren't enough anymore?

Make everything in living rooms out of silver, in noble rooms out of electrum/platinum and in kings room out of gold.

Nope.

Here's how it happens. Combat squad dies, all their spouses get sad and die. After that all their friends follow suit. Then their friend's friends, etc. It does happen....

I think awesome dining rooms are basically a requirement in the game (for happiness). That said, they don't cure all....

Agreed, and no fix I know of.

Plat is more expensive than gold, but point taken.

Get some statues made, and put them beside doorways.  Like if the entrance to your fort is 1 door, then place 4 statues on the inside and outside.  Dwarves get happy thoughts looking at statues and stuff, and four masterwork platinum statues is a lot of happiness.

Good point, I'll try this. It alters housing plans somewhat but if it stops the tantrum spiral, then great.

Also, I think I found something that contributes to my spirals: my perfectionism. I spend too long carving out my fort and the Dwarves will sleep without a bed for a while.... They get absolutely awesome rooms eventually but I should fix this.

Bedrooms for every one. Legendary dining room. Statue garden. In well-made forts, it's nearly impossible to suffer from a tantrum spiral.

Also traps.  A steel mechanism (built in the forge under Trap Components, made by a Mechanic, not a metalsmith) encrusted with diamonds and gems and all sorts of fancy thing, gets very expensive.  Mechanisms count as furniture, so they can be encrusted and studded easily.  Take this wondrous mechanism, and build a cage trap or weapon trap just inside/outside the dining hall door.  They'll admire it every time they go to eat.

Also, drop kittens on them.  If dwarves see enough death no caused by butchering, they gain "doesn't really care about anything" and pretty much will not tantrum after that.  So, pit them under a pit and drop live goblins, to splatter at their feet.

It seems no matter what you do, you cannot really avoid it. Just got my bookkeeper starting a tantrum because his her pet died of old age even through he has got a lot of positive thoughts.
