It's a building destroyer naturally, but also a person who writes a post just to start an argument.

I meant no offense, if he (You) felt offended - excuse me. But a "There are lamps" response surely clears things out  ::)
Starting an argument with a valid argument is definitely not trolling. He told you that sunlight is possible to replace with special lamps and he was correct (at least to an extent).

The fact that they are not perfect is a moot point when people living in cities already get less sunlight than they should. As is the risk of cancer, given that natural sunlight causes it too. In fact, I believe artificial sunlight could be somewhat better about that, as you can control what varieties of UV they produce.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

E : Ah, a valid point. I didn't consider costs at all. As for medical - no doubts about that, it won't be long till blind people will start seeign again, and as it is now, i am sure we can keep people up and running with any lights. But in my PoV the 'tech' alone wouldn't be sufficient at all. I assumed "j0nas" meant just the lamps, and nothing else.
Perhaps you are not remembering correctly.  That's okay, we can always scroll back to read up on why I focused only on light, and nothing else.

No matter how cool it would be to live underground, sun-light is a vital part of our lives.    :-\

Thus unless they find a way to re-produce its effects underground, it's a no-go for longer time periods.
The technology to do this already exists, it's called 'lamps'.  They also come in UV varieties, should you so desire. ;)
Here we go.  See, your main concern with the viability of living underground was the lack of sunlight.  That was a silly concern, which is why I pointed that out, and only that.  There was no need to mention the fact that living underground would be vastly more expensive, less convenient or anything else, because you were not objecting on any of those points, but on the point of light alone.

I'm sorry if the fact that you 'keep using sunlight + mirrors to light MY apartment' did not make you an uncontested authority on the subject, or in this case even vaguely clued-in, but putting you straight most definitely does not make me or anyone else a 'troll'.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Sounds like Dwarf Fortress. Aboveground and with trees. If Finland is the opposite land, does it mean underground Helsinki would turn into an elven forest retreat without trees?

Metal halide is a highly efficient light source capable of delivering a white light in the range of 2700 to 5500 Kelvin degrees with typical Color Rendering Index (CRI) ratings in the mid-60's to mid-70's. Some lamp chemistries even obtain CRI's in the 80s. The CRI is an index that measures how closely an artificial light source matches the natural colors of sunlight, with 100 being a perfect score. In contrast, high pressure sodium lamps yield yellow lighting (2200K) and have a very poor color rendering index of 22.
....
For horticultural purposes, metal halides tend to produce a shorter, more compact plant habit that more closely resembles plants grown outdoors. A plants appearance growing under most metal halide lamps is almost identical to those growing outside, which makes it the preferred lamp for use in living areas. Horticultural metal halide lamps have an enhanced red spectrum, which is added for increased fruiting and flowering without sacrificing plant appearance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Verily.  I imagine you'd want to install lights like these all around the common areas in residential zones anyway, just to get some plant-life going and keep things from becoming too...concretey, and I'm thinking that by itself might be enough to stave off many of the UV-related deficiencies.  Especially if care is taken such that public transportation takes most people through such areas on a regular basis.

Sure because you don't want the blighters becoming cave adapted, otherwise they would puke all over their pristine white snow camouflage  when all drafted into a militia to stave off a commie goblin siege .

Yeah, thanks for posting this... very cool.

On getting your vitamin D underground, you could also pipe in the sunlight via fiber optic cables: http://www.jetsongreen.com/2008/08/parans-fiber-op.html
