I always build some sort of defensive fortress above ground made of stone blocks, so I never really have too much stone

Same here but I've tried clearing stone by just making a ton of stuff out of it and I can only get rid of about half of it. Also, I can't really control where they clear the stone from and it seems like they have an annoying tendency to get a bit from here and a bit from there leaving every room with some bits of stone in it, in the way of door placement or other things.

There pretty much has to be a way to say "move this stone here because it's going to block building something".

I only use quantum stockpiles for stone, though, I do draw stone from them for building stuff. I don't explicityly move stuff into them as a replacement for stockpiles, and if I build stuff above ground I create normal stone stockpiles nearby, so I don't feel like this is much of an explot. It's not like I'm using them to stack up metal bars, food, items, or ore for stockpile storage.

I'd be perfectly happy with some more reasonable way to dump stone such as a deep pit, but if you fill up a pit it should be more space efficient than stacking up stone in front of a shop or something.

Use the stocks screen to forbid all stone, then use d-b-c to reclaim the areas you want the dwarves to clear.  Also build the mason workshop in the middle of the area to be cleared and the masons will grab the nearest stone and work his way outward in a ring.  Also build multiple workshops, i like to use 5 workshops with 5 dedicated masons and build blocks.  this gives me 5 good masons for making statues and other furniture later, and a crapton of blocks to build whatever from.

Alternatively, use all the stone you get to build up from the surface.  Maybe try to build a mirror image of your mines below?  (You'll need to modify the worldgen settings to give you more airspace)

I'd happily dump the stone down a bottomless pit as an alternative, but, well, you know.


And since we are on the topic of exploits, my real favorite for clearing stone is to give it a boiling point of 10015, which is the ambient underground temperature.

Exploit as in contrary to the intention with which the game was designed and meant to be played?  Yes.

Exploit as in using this will give you a advantage?  No.

Isn't any sort of modding more of an exploit than anything you can do in an unmodified game?

No. The game itself creates piles of stuff all the time. For instance, when you kill goblin ambushers at your entrance using large, serrated steel discs, the game just stacks their stuff one on top of the other. But there's plenty of other times...

Your dwarves will fill any space in a stockpile even with an empty barrel on that space, so long as the stockpile isn't furniture. I've seen 8 empty barrels in the same spot as a newly hauled drink barrel in the booze stockpile.

Bins can store quivers which can be actively storing arrows.

Cabinets and coffers can hold items which themselves are holding items.

It only seems like an exploit because our dwarves cannot stack multiple objects in stockpile ON PURPOSE. They'll do it just fine on accident. The dwarves need SHELVES to allow them to store multiple items (including bins) in the same tile on purpose. Build a shelf (out of all suitable materials: wood, stone, metal, clay, glass, etc), install it in a room to allow it's owner to use it, and let it as barrels and bins by the stockpile system. When a stockpile is full, a dwarf grabs an unused shelf, carries it to the stockpile, and places the object that was in that place (whether its a bin or a barrel or door or statue or whatever), and goes about their business.

This would create the following cascade:
item -> bin/barrel/jar/pot -> shelf

Bags would fill up a barrel, and barrels of bags would pile up on shelves.

The real problem would be FPS loss as we would have this added layer of containers to be search through.

Not really.  An exploit occurs within the confines of the game; modding is an entirely separate process.  Sometimes it's just modding; sometimes it's cheating.  It's never quite an exploit, though it might be a Meta-exploit.

Wow.  even just typing "exploit" over and over again makes it seem like less of a word.

Not making things of that particular stone is usually quite trivial.

I often use only one or two particular types of stone in a fortress, apart from specially colored stones for labeling/art purposes. Not to mention you could make everything out of glass/metal/wood.

Since volume and mass don't really have much meaning right now, I consider it just one of the many quirks of physics in DF. I fully expect that once volume and mass actually matter dumps will become inefficient stockpiles, useful only for their catch-all nature, and the issue will become moot.
