And how, pray-tell, do you atom smash something that you cannot move?  Aside from re-arranging your entire fortress to allow this one bridge to perform this one action and knock out walls to place the bridge, then, you couldn't really do it...

Build a bridge on the Z-level directly under it.  Channel out the floor it's on.  Pull the lever.  Rebuild the floor.

Build a bridge next to it and hook that up to a lever?

You will get "<dwarf> cancels construct bridge: Item blocking site" if you try to build the atom smasher on top of the item. If you build the bridge next to the item you will... smash empty area next to the item?

Dropping a floor on the item will work, but requires a lot of effort and is dangerous to nearby dwarves.

What would be best is to lock your dwarves and move items elsewhere, then run magma cleansing through your halls to burn all the crap, then drain it all somewhat. Fun might happen if you mess something.

Bah, like I said earlier, magma is the solution to this problem.  Just build redundant sets of hallways and a system to airlock and magma-flood every single hallway in your fortress.  Stuff no self-respecting dwarf would do without in their fortress, anyway.

Out of all of these suggestions, building and dropping a floor on the item seems easiest.

Just a note - When I started creating adventurer boltholes in 2010, I noticed that container item quality changed the amount I could naturally store in something in adventure mode (naturally, as in barring the "pick up put in backpack" bug). At least it seemed that way. Anyone else notice this, or am I imagining things?

If it's true, then crappy cabinets wont hold as many clothes. Which kind of makes sense.

How would we go about comparing cabinet material and quality to storage capacity?

Ah yes. Wasn't thinking. I'd probably just use dfliquids and apply magma or obsidian anyway.

Other than in adventure mode - not sure.
In adventure mode - check weights. or just stuff rocks into them and then count the rocks.

A few ideas:

0) cabinets/chest for the owner (may require encouraging with burrows)
1) if you mark it for "D"ump won't at least the very owner dump it? (may require encouraging with burrows)
2) if the owner dumps it, does the owner keeps the ownership? I mean does the items still belong to a dwarf even if that very dwarf dumps it away?
3) Trade Depot: can you move/trade owned items? if so who can move them? only the owner? do the item keep ownership after being moved to the Depot??
4) Forbidding/Dumping while moving to or being traded to the depot? like when you force-dump liquids by moving them to the depot...
5) using bridges to move them by pushing them??
6) channel and drop
7) using water to push them

8 ) Destroying the item:
* dumping magma on it
* dumping water then magma -> obsidian
* building a bridge that atom smashes it won't allow construction?
* cave-in something on it
* setting it on !!fire!!
* does freezing destroy the items??
* force move (channel/pushing) into a chasm/atom-smasher?

9) Killing the owner and inheritors (the owner can't have a burial receptacle assigned beforehand or the items will be buried with the owner)

The bug has been there since before .31.01.  About all you can do is either use the "hide" button, or if it really bothers you, find a way to apply magma to the problem.  Otherwise, an insurmountable tide of detritus will eventually drown your fort.

It's a hugely annoying bug, and it probably won't be fixed any time soon, since Toady is more focused on bugs that crash the game or even worse bugs like the splatter problem.

does hiding it help with framerate issues too?
