Dwarves refusing to dump owned items?
« on: February 23, 2011, 08:55:07 pm »

So I decided to clean up the fort a bit, in particular all the blood-stained clothing strewn about the entrance. However it seems a few of my dwarves have taken a liking to some of these articles, yet apparently not enough of a liking to actually put the items away. What's most insulting is that each and every one of my dwarves has his or her own chest and cabinet..

So yeah. Bunch of items marked for dumping, just laying on the ground. Each and everyone is owned by someone. Is there anything I can do?

Give them somewhere to put it.  A cabinet will store clothes, a chest will store anything else.

That's the thing though...

Mind you the chest/cabinet project is a bit still in the works, I think a few dwarves have one but not the other. I'll wait until that project is complete and see if they pick up their crap.

Make sure that married dorfs only have one bedroom assigned to one of them, otherwise the clothes of the one, who decided to sleep in the bedroom of the other one will never ever being stored.

The bug has been there since before .31.01.  About all you can do is either use the "hide" button, or if it really bothers you, find a way to apply magma to the problem.  Otherwise, an insurmountable tide of detritus will eventually drown your fort.

It's a hugely annoying bug, and it probably won't be fixed any time soon, since Toady is more focused on bugs that crash the game or even worse bugs like the splatter problem.

I've found that giving the dwarves with a lot of items outside their rooms more chests/cabinets will sometimes help them find a place to put that ultra shiny new vermillion blue cap they covet.

And how, pray-tell, do you atom smash something that you cannot move?  Aside from re-arranging your entire fortress to allow this one bridge to perform this one action and knock out walls to place the bridge, then, you couldn't really do it...

No, the atom smash is for the owner of the dropped item, if there is no owner it will be dumped right away.

Of course, the dwarfiest solution. Kill a dwarf so you can rearrange their (former) belongings.

Chests/cabinets do seem to have a limit to how much they can store, so if you're feeling thurough, go find the owner's bedroom and see how full their storage units are.  If the relevant type seems to have several items in it already, might be worthwhile giving them another.  It doesn't always convince them to go pick up their clothes, but it has helped enough of the time that it's probably worth a shot.

Some of my (non-noble) dwarves have wound up with 3+ cabinets worth of clothing, which just boggles me.

I've had my mayors litter their office floor with rings, and then litter the hallway outside their offices with rings, all while their chests were still empty.

And they never use them, and they keep buying them no matter how many they already claimed.

They just like to litter.

Drop a floor on it?

Build a bridge next to it and hook that up to a lever?
