This is what happens when you block off your local river supply.
« on: February 23, 2011, 06:05:50 pm »

I tried to be a real dwarf and take control of the water supply, it didn't work out. I didn't know water could travel up a well..
the flooded area you see in this image was my great hall.

shortly after i was ambushed and the whole ambush got caught in all my cage traps. I made a large pit and told the dwarfs to drop the goblins down the pit. They then made the choice to take the Goblins OUT of the cages to put them in the pit, my fortress was then quickly dismantled.

Things on my list not to do so far is:
1. Expect years trained veterans to be any good.
2. Expect my crossbowmen to understand how to shoot out of a tower.
3. Don't dump refuse and corpses near the local water supply.
4. Get soap before lowering the gate to the outside world.
5. Don't dig to far down, those forgotten beats have already destroyed me enough times.
(stub nosed crocodile thats explodes with a deadly dust every few seconds that on death gives all the surrounding dwarfs infection)
6. Don't think that the fortress is going well, thats when something bad happens.
7. Don't try to rush a single goblin with all your inexperienced dwarfs, somehow the goblin will pull through and slaughter everyone.
8. When your safe in your fortress with the gate up and Goblins on the other side want a fight your experienced warriors, don't lower the gate to be a gentleman.
9. Don't trust on the intelligence of dwarfs.
(9'th of obsidian A trade caravan arrives, i tell the dwarfs we will sell the goblins to the elf caravan. Then they proceed to free the goblins and ask them nicely to come to the trade depot, the result was a few mutilated goblins and a hurt fisherman)
10. When you think you understand water YOU DONT! just be happy with the water supply and the farm irrigation you get.

WTB: Fun, at cheap price.  You seem overstocked.

You, my friend, seem to be learning at a fast rate. I'd say you should have done a reroute first then damn the river.

I learned recently (after 60+ tries) that I just can't do cave ins

Sorry do you mean cave ins to stop the water? and what do you mean by reroute?
Do you mean an exhauster for the water that enters my channels?

Make sure you run the water through a diagonal and/or through an automated pump to tame the pressure.

Make sure you got floodgates and hatch covers linked to levers (levers that will be accesible even during flood) before you let water flow anywhere through your fortress.

Yes, I learned it from my own experiences. :D

I never let water from anything bigger than a muddy pool in my fort without at least a lever controlled door or floodgate to cut off the supply if anything goes wrong. It is a paranoia that has saved me a couple of times.

6. Don't think that the fortress is going well, thats when something bad happens.

This particular rule sums up all of DF tbqh.

One more thing that I'd recommend for your list is: Don't put a well in a Dining Hall.

There's two major reasons for that; three if you're not using a pre-existing water source.

One of them you already know, but the others are:

1. Dwarves can and will fall down wells by accident so it's best to keep them out of high traffic areas.
2. Flying creatures can travel up through wells.

Sure, a nice well can make dwarves happy, but putting them in an area where a lot of dwarves congregate can and will go south very quickly if a Forgotten Beast with wings shows up. A nice set of statues will accomplish the same thing, but not be a potential entry point for something with more teeth than you have dwarves. It's best to keep wells off somewhere that can be locked down with a drawbridge if necessary.

ALSO!  Forgotten Beast contaminants will collect around a well, so having your dining hall turn into a death trap... yeah.

So it's basically a bad idea to make a meeting hall out of a well?

Generally yes.  Ideally, your dwarves drink booze, and any water in your meeting area is merely a lavish waterfall (or four).  Wells should be reserved for hospitals and for lock-able rooms.  If contaminants get on a dorf, they go the the well and wash it off.  The next dwarf to use the well collects it on their feet...

It' not as impressive as it sounds.  You lose the liaison and thus the yearly caravan.  If your site lacks iron and flux, then becoming the moutainhomes means you can no longer gather steel.  Ever.
