so against armor it's hammers or what? personnaly my favorite weapon is adamantine swords, i love seing the limbs flying everywhere on the battlefield (am i weird or what?)
It's not weird my army is made out of Axedwarves that double as lumberjacks on peace time. I once saw 5 axers hit a troll at the same time and it literally exploded. Axers make a big mess but with d->b->d ,200 dwarfs and an atom smasher cleaning up isn't that bad. (my fps is 25-35 on 3X3)

IIRC, dwarves equip weapons based on their prices, so they forgo cheap iron for expensive steel.

Masterwork silver is best for blunt weapons, but it is less expensive than others so dwarves will drop it in favor of other materials.

You can either give dwarves explicit orders to wield specific item, or you can decorate hell out of your silver hammers/maces to make them more valuable than steel.

A simpler method may be just not making weapons you don't want your dwarves to use, and melting any that come your way. Unless you're using steel because you don't have enough silver to outfit all your hammerdwarves.

Or tell them to only equip a certain material?

Has anyone done any testing to see if physically weak dwarves are more effective with heavier or lighter maces? It stands to reason that a strong dwarf would perform well with heavier maces, but weak dwarves would need lighter ones for optimal performance.

By the way, I design table top RPGs and other games. You can buy some.

Strength seems to only affect encumberment, but this is only my experience.  I haven't tested it thoroughly.

I know adventurers effectively behave the same, so make a few and compare identical adventurers with only strength modified.
